How to be a jerk guitar player

Haha! I'm guilty of #1. The soloing to someone else plying part. Wasn't trying to be a jerk though. He looked over at me and smiled so he was ok with it.

Alright, so while this is all well and good... he totally skips the biggest gatherings of guitar player jerks in the world:

The internet guitar gear forums.

So, with that, I'd like to add Step 11:

Step 11:

[Always Talk A Big Game In Online Gear Forums]

- make sure to critique those people who post clips/vids when you have nothing posted yourself
- act like an expert in guitar building, amp building, sound mixing, etc... when you have zero experience
- give advice to others' gear problems when you don't know jack shit
- shout down and mock those who know more than you
- compliment other neophytes like yourself; you may eventually get a following
- continually craft your humongous online persona; gathering forum cred any way you can
- if someone calls you out for what you really are (a poseur), report them to the mods

That was pretty good and I agree with almost all of it, at least some of the time. The one point that doesn't stand up completely imo is the one about competitiveness. Yeah, don't be an over aggressive douche all day every day. But a certain level of competition between you and your mates is a great way to keep the fire burning and your chops sharp, especially early into your guitar playing voyage. I think the key is to do it with other players who are at or around your same level to help keep you motivated and not to target newbs as a way to stoke your ego. Just my 2 cents.

Dude is really serious. He's learnin' people sumtin'.

Damn, just yesterday had a guy soloing over what I was playing in a music store. I knew he was doing it because every time I'd change key or style to get away from it, he would adjust to match me. Was killin' me. I just gave up and left.

It's what I get for going on a Saturday...

You should have started playing leads in the same key he was playing. Do that and add some cowbell and you never know where things might go.

I'd add... The guys who have extensive lists of high-end amps in their signature, 10,000 posts and start a clip post with "please excuse the shitty playing". Oh wait.. I'm the jerk for finding it amusing.

Do you know how to make a guitar player turn down?

...Put sheet music in front of him!

There was a guy who came to the local jam night and brought his Jim Kelley amp. He had EVM 12L's in it, and turned that thing up way too loud, maybe his hearing was shot. Consequently the house band had to turn up, the PA, etc, etc.

But the most annoying thing was he kept playing a solo LONG after his solo break was over. The other players would look over at him and he kept looking down, playing for EFFING EVER, and one of the other players would have to go over and nudge him with a guitar neck, throw a microphone at him, whatever it took.

And he wondered why they only got him up on stage at the end of the night. If you can't play well with others, chances are you won't get to play much. The guy was a good 10 years older than me, and I learned this back in the 70's. So I don't know why he figured it was ok. Go figure.
