I am a mid gain addict

I like to have an assortment. Have the Einstein for the super clean and the high gain and the TT for the mid-gain stuff. Works very well IMO.

I use the Einstein for low/mid-gain country stuff now! I works incredibly well and I prefer it way over my Fender combos and other amps I used to blend together! Slap a compressor on the Texas channel (I use G-Force's compressor - sounds a lot better than a Keeley) and WOW, its freakin awesome

I dunno...threads pop up like this from time to time with everybody giving the low-gain love, but yet 95% of the clips that people post are what I would consider pretty high gain. Does not compute. Maybe the mid-gainers just aren't the guys that post clips?

Shit...I gave up on posting amp clips to forums due to everyone telling me to add more gain all the time.

My idea of mid-gain seems to be most others idea of low-gain.

Mid gain = early AC/DC, Allman Bros, Audley Freed, most Led Zep, Keef Richards

(Warren Haynes fits in here somewhere between mid and high)

High gain = early VH, most 80's cock rock

Anything higher than that is definitely high gain.

I find the older I get, the less gain I need... it's still fun to have amps that do the super saturated thing, but a lot of amps that people say don't have much gain like a mesa stage I stilletto have plenty to me.

Hard to define high gain too... I see Van Halen as more a medium gain, personally.

Yeah, I think the first VH was a little gainy and then the gain seems to have backed off a little for the next 3 records. And I think EVH was using very little gain but got that saturation sound on record through means other than the amp gain. You're right, early VH could be considered mid gain.

I consider 1984 to be mid gain for sure. To me mid gain is Bad Co. ol' Bowie, James Gang stuff. To me high gain is late 70's early 80's metal and beyond. Old Scorps to Metallica, Slayer etc. AC/DC drift in and out of high gain. Fly on the Wall is high gain to me but they're last few are on the lower side of mid gain to me. Let There Be Rock is high gain to me but in the best way of amps about to explode.

My ideal sound of low gain is Mountain's 'Mississippi Queen' which has got to be the fattest, warmest tone I've heard that has set a standard to my ears. Mid gain would be most anything Michael Schenker has done, both vintage and newer material, which again I use as a benchmark for my preference in dialing in the right amount of gain. I definitely notice that turning up the gain all the way on most high gain amps can get super compressed, buzzy and even thinner sounding in some regards. I know there are exceptional amps, especially boutique amps that can hold up well to cranking the gain.

I cant get to play midgain myself, it just doesnt sound right.. maybe it's because I need more overdrive to hide my sloppyness. Rythm sounds awfull, lacks power and leads.. oh boy I won't comment.
