Clips can be very misleading though, and I’m sure it’s a totally different beast in the room.sutepaj":z6u8vdje said:I have no dog in the fight and could never afford a Larry..but those clips sound absolutely average to me. You could have told me that is any amp in the world and I would have believed it.
Ding...ding...ding...winner. Clips of any particular amp may sound good, or they may sound like ass and likewise they may or may not sound like the amp in the room.
They're fun, but I would never make an amp purchase decision based on any clip.
Ya gotta be careful with recorded clips. I've spent enough time in recording studios over the last 25 years to realize that a good player can produce outstanding tracks with any reasonable quality amp and speaker cab. With judicious use of speaker selection, mic selection and placement, and the use of outboard and desk EQ, a huge variety of great tones can be coaxed from even the most mundane amps.
BUT....where the rubber really hits the road with the truly great amps is how the mind-blowing sound they produce in the room can inspire a player to provide an incredible take vs a mediocre performance. This same dynamic also applies to live performance.
So while maybe you can use clips to shortlist some amps that have a tonal center that sits in your wheelhouse, ya gotta get out and play the damn amps, and stand next to the cab and feel it, to see if its your thing or not.
And yeah, after hearing that last iso clip, if I ever thought I could actually get my hands on a Larry amp, it would def be on my short list.

And I also second the props to Larry for being a very cool and generous contributor on the Metro board back in the day
