I hate the AFD and all of Slash's recorded tones

Not my thing either. Like G n R as a band, and his playing fit really well, but nothing I was ever looking to emulate.

Never have been a huge fan of his tone. It's not bad tone, but it's too nasally and thin. I don't like Axls voice either.

When the first album came out, a friend of mine (Who happened to look exactly like Axl) loaned me his tape for a week, and I didn't like it. Later, when Nirvana came out, along all their shitty clones, I found that GnR was a pretty damn good sounding group after all.

I do like his tone on the solo of November Rain though.

It's funny you mention November Rain. It always seems to be playing when I turn on the radio these days and I'm amazed that I don't mind hearing it everytime. I think it's because his tone on the solo's is just incredibly piercing but sweet at the same time. It's very unique and very cool. The tone on AFD is perfect for the attitude and songs. I don't care for it for my own playing but it's that magical combination of sometimes strange parts that make the stew so tasty.

Dave, I completely agree with you about Slash. I never liked his tone or style.

off topic ..but when I think of awesome marshall tone...AC/DC Back in Black comes to mind.. in fact the whole production is the perfect sounding rock mix!

I love Slash dearly, but I do agree with you... His tone ain't the best.

Having said that: When a song from AFD comes on in a loud bar, it has a certain ring to it, don't you think?

i think his tone works for the overall sound of the songs ,but for me its not a tone i would shoot for in my playing

George Lynch likes the AFD tone

..and probably toured with the Caswell #39 that SLASH first played on the demo tapes which resulted in Levi (supposedly)having to create #36 with which AFD was recorded. Lynch loved that brittle tin can piercing tone and you can hear it on some of the live vids from 87' on youtube. Drenched in verb and delay of course! ;) It definitely cuts through for albums.. personally, the tone I record with is different than the one i can bare to stand in front of when I face my 4 x 12.

I agree his tones are a little too thin and "crispy" or raspy for me, especially on AFD. But I love the guy and his playing. His tones are better on Illusion 1&2.

I agree as well. I find nothing special about his sound or his style. I think he is a good song writer, but I really don't care for his playing. I caught him on the George Lopez show. GL guitar player and Slash had a dual and it was not good. I give him props. He has come out with some really good songs. Then again GNR for me was not the same without Izzy Stradlin.

Ratt > slash.

I would agree with this -- but I do like the tones on AFD.

I also like early VH tones,...as well as the Recto tones on King's X "Dogman" (love Ty's early stuff too), and Foo Fighters "The Colour and The Shape". I also love the tones AC/DC got on records like "Powerage", "Highway To Hell" and "Black in Black". Love Jerry Cantrell's tones on every record he ever recorded on. Oh -- also love the tones Steven Carpenter of the Deftones got on "Around The Fur" and "White Pony", and the tones Ken Andrews got on Failure's "Fantastic Planet".

I guess my point is -- I like all kinds of different guitar tones. Just depends on the type of record/style of music.

I am indifferent to Slash's tone but IMO AFD would not sound good with a Diezel or Engl. That is a not a bash on either amp I just think his tone fits the music. It was noticeably different than everyone else's tone at the time while remaining very simple for Marshall purists to love.

I think if you take the added EQ mid hump away from AFD and most other GNR tunes, what is left is a good tubey crunch tone. Hopefully, THAT is what the Marshall AFD-100 will capture - good tube driven gain, minus the Slash wah-stuck-in-middle sound.

I'm not fond of any of Slash's tones either Dave... That tone definitely suited the music of GnR but for anything else, it lacks big time IMO!

I like his Snakepit tones the best.....

His tones were engineered to stand out in the mix, and they do, really well. Would prob sound like total crap as an isolated track, but that's not the point.

Yeah it's like the " lets step outside and have a smoke " bell ringing.
