Ok but anymore his tone is awful and he just isnt playing anything that interests me

He's been getting more into the blues lately... he explains the shift here:

Paul is the same and could still play like that.

I honestly dont think he ever will again. I remember an interview with him during the era of many lessons he would give to people, and the number one thing they wanted to do was play fast. They tried in front of him and failed miserably every single time. He said they lacked rhythm and he hated himself for promoting that type of playing without the basics being emphasized first.

So honestly I doubt he will ever go back to that style - it isn't his current taste and he hated himself for what he did to the public eye for music.

Sad, but I see his point of view.

Rightly so, but he could if he wanted to. Paul most definitely hasn't lost any ability over the last 20 years. He sincerely enjoys playing guitar and always seems so excited to play.

He will revist that phase at some point. I'm almost certain. Gary Moore was getting back into his '80s hard rock catalog when he passed away. It's in their bones. I've gone through the same thing.....moving on, searching out new styles, then returning for a bit to my roots. The part that doesn't always return is the hair.

Ha! Good point. I think the style we truly love is always with us, no matter how we try to "evolve".....

He's right.. his playing now is a lot more varied and more colorful than the straight up and down speed shred with arpeggios. He can still do it any day of the week but has chosen to mix it up. For the OP, in a lot of the videos you post of you playing, it seems as if you lean more towards the shred and jamming in as many notes as you can into a particular phrase. That's cool and it is fun to do BUT having a bit of space between the notes and letting things breathe often says more than 40 notes. I compare Shenker to Gilbert with that huge vibrato and use of flat notes here or there and crazy bends and he makes his guitar speak so much more than the classic Racer X Paul. I love both styles but think the two together is the ultimate.

It is funny to me - in that second video he says metal is kind of boring. He would rather play the blues - I would give my left nut to be able to play like him ha. Funny sometimes how what is valuable to some is disregarded by others. Wihs I was half the player is......sigh

Even when he plays the blues or any other genre he throws in some lighting fast super clean picked licks. So he can definetly still do it.

PG is just an amazing player. I love when he plays with that preciseness and dry tone. Just incredible.

I attended MI when Paul was there in '86 and '87. I appreciated his talent, precision, and speed then. I prefer his note choices and phrasing now. His playing has a maturity to it now. It doesn't always need to be fast, I prefer feel and conviction.

I love the guy, but I hope he isn't falling into that, I used to be a ripping guitar player, but now I'm going to be a blues player, thing.

He will NEVER be a blues player. Blues is played out anyway. Everything is a repeat.;)

I totally disagree on blues being played out.
I improvise over a 12 bar blues backing track almost daily along with other modal backing tracks.

I can't tell you how many people I know who are shredders that have a difficult time with it.

You can use many different approaches other than a simple minor pent scale. The use of different pent scales, arpeggios, thinking modally playing over each chord, and the use of space to create tension.

The only thing repetitive is the loop. It's the basis for so much in improvising study IMO.

Totally disagree with at statement.

There's a big difference between playing the blues & playing the Blues scale. Paul has yet to graduate authentically to the former.

You guys should check out Paul's Rock School at Artistworks.com:

Not only does he have a bunch of learning material, but the secret sauce are the Video Exchanges he does with students that anyone can view.

He's just passed 3000 Video Exchanges.

The shred hasn't left him, and he's as perfect as ever. VE's he does are awesome, and cater to each student based on their level of experience.

I'm on my second year with it, and it's worth every penny. And there are lot's of VE's with super-clean and precise ripping.
