Just out of curiosity, where are your mids set on your amp?

You could try a Rio Grande BBQ Bucker, great sounding FAT pickup!!

My mids are cranked... not into scooping at all. The thing is that my ESP horizon (bolt-on) has a JB too; and it sounds much ballsier than the esp eclipse I want this new pickup for; so it's not an amp-dialing issue.

These don't seem to get talked about much anymore, but I totally agree. Completely forgot about the BBQ when I suggested Aldrich. Fat is one of the first words that comes to mind and it's a killer sounding pickup.

...The big question is: Does it retain some of the mids/highs characteristics of the JB? I mean, really unforgiving, dynamic pick attack (sorta single-coilish), crunchy high mids texture, not low-mid congested, etc?

bare knuckle holy diver
fatter, more open and crunchy, instead of overcompressed, more articulate and smoother on the top end

I'm not the greatest at putting tones into words, but I found some good info in the link below on how the BBQ sounds in different guitars. Lots of comparisons to a JB (most of which I agree with), but I have mine in a Les Paul, which is a completely different situation to yours. To me, it's got a very JB-like vibe. Definitely fatter, but not congested at all. It might not be as bright or single coil-ish as you're looking for.

If you google "Avarice & Absolution" you should find some links to songs that were recorded with a BBQ bucker. I had it in my Les Paul at the time, and pretty much used that all over the record.

To add to what folks here have said, SD has a bunch of JB derivatives in their line. There's:

The Warren DiMartini RTM: https://www.seymourduncan.com/products/c ... _demartin/ JB with A2 mags

Antiquity JB: https://www.seymourduncan.com/2011produc ... zz-set.php Old-school aged construction JB; should be softer in the highs

Allan Holdsworth AH-1: https://www.seymourduncan.com/support/fa ... _still_ma/ Not a great description at the SD page, but it's a JB with two screw coils; less highs, more mids. I have one of these that I like a lot in my strat bridge, and also recommend the series/split/parallel with it. If it helps, Doug Aldrich and Jake Lee used 'em!

Hope some of this helped a bit!

Man, I'd be interested in checking out the DeMartini with the JB and A2.

Completely agree on the BBQ - my favorite pickup. Fat and thick and singing, but plenty tight enough and well defined.

This! I love Rio Grande pickups. I've got a Crunchbox sitting in a drawer here, I gotta get that in a guitar. I'm having a bit of a pickup crisis at the moment   I need to change the pickups in my LP. I've got a set of EMGs (85/60A) that I haven't used in many years, along with the Crunchbox and a GFS Mean P90 neck pickup. Not sure what to go with here. I haven't used the EMGs in years, so that would be a fun experiment, but I'm not sure if I'll be happy with them for the mid gain and clean tones.
