Well, boosting the hell out of it with anything is close enough to a distortion pedal IMO.
I probably think that way since I generally won't use a "distortion pedal" anymore, but choose to use some milder OD to "clean boost" an amp; to me that is "distortion pedal" usage nowadays. I find most "distortion pedals" in general to be unappealing to me.
