Here's my only J.Custom left. Body is from the JC8620 spalted maple, neck is from a JC 8570M and the pickups are BK Rebel Yell. Last pic was my JC collection from a few years ago.

that pic of the 6 or 7 j customs is awesome. Now you only have 1? I noticed you have 4 or 5 Suhrs including a couple Moderns. Did you sell the J Customs to get your Suhrs? The J Custom I played recently not only played and sounded incredible, but the build quality was top notch also, I just didn't like the tree of life inlay. They appeared to be of the same quality as my Suhr Modern. Why did you ditch your J Customs, and how would you compare them to your Suhrs, especially for leads and solo type stuff? Thanks man!!

I'm interested in hearing opinions on this as well. Also for those who owned both the J Custom and JEM's, how do the two compare?

the most GAS inducing thread ever.

+1000000000000000! Need to find a GC to demo these at, is there a way to tell who has one in stock?

The J Custom I played felt, played, and sounded better than the Jems I have played, but the way it sounded is personal taste. The neck felt better, and it felt and appeared to be a solidly well built instrument. It was a newer model with tree of life inlay. It seemed to be as well built as the Suhr Modern I currently play. The J Custom was very nice, although, I guess it is Ibanez's finest luthiers/craftsmen who build them, so they better be a damn good guitar. I would say it can hang with anything in its price range. I think some people are turned off due to the fact that it is an Ibanez. Personally, if a guitar sounds and plays good, and a plus for it looking good also, I don't care what the brand. But I understand how a lot of guys don't want an Ibanez, just like me not wanting that irritating tree of life inlay on the fretboard!!

Thanks for this. I gotta find somewhere to compare these to my Suhr Modern.

I got a quote for the RG8570Z and RG7570Z from ishibashi and was told 240,000 JPY for either, which translates to ~$2,350. Waiting to hear back regarding shipping. Thinking of picking up one in the BBE finish. Doesn't seem like a bad price if you get it directly from Japan. I should've had my friend who went to Japan pick me up one to save on shipping :) I actually really dig the tree of life, maybe because I always wanted a JEM.

Importing from Japan (likely from Ishibashi) was my other option too before the domestic (Canadian) sale on my JC came up. If I get another JC down the road I might go that way, I like some of their wood and color options.

Is that quoted price with Japan's domestic tax included? Ishibashi typically factors that into their advertised price already, i.e. subtract 5% (soon to be 8%) to get the "export" price.

I have no idea, I asked for a quote shipped to my address. Hoping to hear back from them soon.

To me, they're both great guitars. I did get rid of all my JC's (except the spalted maple) for Suhr's. The Suhr's just felt better in my hands and the Gotoh trem is killer. All my Suhr's have the Reb Beach neck profile except the LE09, love that RB neck shape. Probably looking for a better answer than that, but honestly it came down to feel and the Suhr's just felt better!

My take on J-Custom vs Suhr: I found them to be nearly the same. Suhrs generally have tighter neck joints and higher quality electronics, but apart from that, they're pretty much equal. You could probably spec out a Suhr with the same neck profile and radius, but I don't think Suhr will do the balled fret ends like J-Customs have (don't quote me). The neck finish is also slightly different between the two. Ibanez has better upper fret access, and both usually sound solid if you dig the wood combos.

Got a quote back, looks like a RG8570ZD is 256,000 JPY shipped.

I went and played my buddies j custom, it is an outstanding guitar. I think I like the neck a little better than my modern. Its blazing fast. a tiny bit wider and flatter than the modern. The J custom is a mahog with maple top and my modern is basswood with maple top, but the maple top on the j custom is definitely thicker than my suhr which is 3/16. The J Custom sounded really good and I usually don't like the tone zone pickup and don't mind the air Norton in the neck, and I don't have a clue as to the middle single coil. I love the ssh+ in my moderns bridge and the ssv is cool in the neck. my only fault with the J custom is the tree of life inlay but that's just me, I find it to be a distraction and an eye sore, I prefer the simplicity of the dots ona fretboard. Oh, and I LOVE EBONY fretboards. My suhrs is pau ferro which is also great. I would have to honestly say, I think without the tree of life inlay I would probably take the J Custom over my Modern which I absolutely love, but I like the neck a tiny bit better and prefer the mahogany with maple top over basswood with maple top. Since I have got this Modern about 3 weeks ago I have rarely put it down. It is that great. But, I think the J Custom would go over as well if not better than the Modern. Both great guitars, the build quality on both is as good as you can get, I cant find a flaw on either. I like the pick ups and the Floyd better on the modern, and the necks flatter wider profile on the J Custom. its a close race for sure. I don't want to let the Modern go, but I want a J Custom REALLY BAD!!! I have seriously gotten back in to practicing fast lead work and have been working on my precision and over all technique. The J Custom is literally made to throw down leads on, at least that is what it feels like to me. What to do??

If you can swing it, maybe find a used J Custom for the time being and play the hell out of it. Would your buddy be willing to do a straight up trade for his JC? I know what you mean though, I wouldn't mind having a mahogany one too.

my buddy would love to trade his j custom for my modern but his has the tree of life inlay and I just cant hang with that. it is an eyesore to me, and I def have a small case of ocd, so when I am playing I could see myself looking at the tree inlay and throwing my playing off. that I cannot have my friend!!

Not the best pic, but this is my favorite Ibanez of the I don't know how many I've owned.

Didn't realize his JC had the ToL, my bad! I have to admit, I have been thrown off my fret markers a few times now. I know what you mean about stuff bothering you, I just cannot get along with 24 fret guitars that have a middle pickup.

I found a gallery of rare J Customs that will likely not help your GAS:

This is one of the J-Customs that Ibanez is importing into the US market. I think dealers should be getting their hands on these around August or so. Only 12 will be brought in.

This is the ONLY J-Custom that has the vine inlays that I actually dig. And I'm digging the fuck of of this. Comes stock with BKP Aftermath's too.

Yeah J-Customs are NOT cheap at all. For the same amount of money, you can also go with a custom Suhr, Anderson, Charvel, Luxxtone..............but J-Custom's are really premium quality guitars and the workmanship on them is incredible. Don't let the Ibanez name tag fool you.

yeah, that thing is bad ass, but for me, the tree of life inlay ruins it.

I'm a fan of inlays. Pretty much every guitar I own has at least blocks.
