To OP: Exact thing happened to me twice in 4 years. Never did anything about it. Nothing happened.

Get something like PeerGuardian 2. I have no idea if it works but it's supposed to block those companies and ISP's from viewing your download/upload traffic. The letter I received said it was the actual owner of the copyrighted material who found the file on my comp and not the ISP.

Not to join in in your heated discussion but I bet my whole gear that you have pirated shit too all around your house or use it in your house/at your work place. I'm not saying piriting is a good thing but I'm betting every single person does it to some extent.[/quote]

"Woo-Hoo"! YOU sir owe me your gear. (or shall I say, "you owe me your whole gear")

I've never once downloaded ANYTHING without paying for it. Please PM me so I can arrange for pick up.

There are many aspects to this subject but I'll bring up one that I think has not been brought up in this thread. And that is how sharing music can actually help bands grow. I used to play in a band 6 or 7 years ago that was getting attention from all over the world simply because of file sharing, this was before the days of myspace blowing up where you could set up your own little showcase. We were getting emails from fans in Europe and Canada wanting to know when we were gonna do a tour, we even got an email from a guy at a radio station in India asking for permission to play our stuff. Those people would have never heard our music if it wasn't for file sharing, we were on a small label and had very limited distro. As matter of fact most bands don't make shit from their record sales in terms of compensation from their label, they make a living by working hard touring and selling merch at the shows. But on the other hand if you can't sell records you can't stay signed, much less get tour support from your label if you need it. To put it simply I'd just say if you download something and you like it, buy a copy, if you wanna support the band buy a ticket to their show and a shirt or something while your there. More importantly share it with your friends who like similar music, they may just do the same.

Yeah, you better believe I do that. I bought the last In Flames CD, went to their show in NY a couple weeks ago. Even buy DVD's when I like the movie, if I don't I end up renting it from a red box. I doubt ANYONE is trying to make ends meet and barely making it by based off the sale of a movie made in 1999 (which is the one they found out about)..

Depends on the movie doesn't it? Why is that a big secret?
