First thing I'd do, is ditch the HP Series, and never mention a G-Force again. Not to mention, their color schemes and hardware offerings are hideous.

Ditch the LP Traditionals, and here's why:
I'd go back to the 90's, and offer the Standard line in choice of neck - 50's rounded, or 60's slim-taper. Kill two birds with one stone. 50's rounded gives you a Traditional, 60's slim-taper gives you what's offered now, screw the asymmetrical. Next thing I'd do is go back to 490R/498T's, like the old days. To me, that's both "Traditional", and "Standard". In wrapping up that line, go back to bread and butter colors, drop the crazy bursts. Ebony, Cherry Sunburst, Honeyburst, Gold Top, Tobacco Sunburst, Trans Amber, call it a day.

Explorers:
Keep current Antique Natural, but add Ebony, and for God's sake, BRING BACK CLASSIC WHITE! What were they thinking? Also, when I think Explorer, I think 496R/500T, not Burstbuckers! As finishing touch, locking mini Grovers. Same with the V's. Classic White Explorers and V's are like baseball and hotdogs.

SG:
I'd add Classic White to that lineup as well. I think they made a good choice going back to the 490R/490T in that, like the days of the Specials offered in the 90's. Love those in SG's, always thought the lower output 490Tin the bridge vs. 498T in that guitar was a better fit. I might add Antique Natural to that lineup.

I'd bring back the LP Classic, like it was. Greenish inlays and all. Ebony, Goldtop, Cherry Sunburst, Honeyburst, Wine Red all with a PLAINTOP, and 496R/500T.

Fuck the Tributes, Fuck the Faded/Worn finishes. Instead, I'd offer Satin finish at a $1000-$1200 price-point in the Explorer, V, SG, and LP Standard line, binding and all, (on the Standard). Gigbag, no case.

LP Studios, I'd again, revert to the old days. Ditch the binding, Ebony, White, Wine Red, and maybe a Honeyburst. Lower the price-point by offering with gigbag, no case.

Bring back the "Plus Top", and expand the colors in that line, vs. regular Standards.

Just my .02. I think it's simple, and caters to most purists.

I agree with almost all of what you said EXCEPT plaintop only on Classics, I have an early 2000s Classic trans amber with a KILLER quilt top. Outstanding guitar.

"Classic White Explorers and V's are like baseball and hotdogs."

The Greatest Quote ever written on an Amp Forum. I applaud you good sir.

They need to bring back 84 style Explorers.

I'm thinking they should do a Guitar Of The Week thing again, and release sought-after things people scream for, like this. They did alot of stupid ones last go-around, but I remember that one being offered.

Didn't they do a Silverburst LP as a Guitar of the Week?

Yep! And a Silverburst 1984 V. Would be nice to see a Silverburst Explorer! I'd be all over it!

I REALLY REALLY want a Silverburst SG Standard one day.

I can’t disagree with anything the OP suggested. Get back to the basics and what made you great to begin with. There are plenty other avenues for the special stuff, since there are a pile of builders out there that can cater to your every whim...and you can still sell it 6 months later for the “old school” original you were trying to improve upon... ?

If I were the CEO of Gibson, I'd fire anyone who came through with an idea like this.. On the spot, no severance package, just get the fuck out.

Amen to that.

No "ROBOT" anything
No "Moderne or Futurea" garbage looking hideous monsters
No crazy looking Firebird reverse garbage looking guitars
Scale back the Sig models by half or more

Essentially, just go grab a Gibson price list from 1968 and make those guitars.

I like the faded finishes. I much prefer them over sticky glossy nitro necks. JMO.

If I were the new CEO of Gibson, I would seriously pay close attention to what Paul Reed Smith is doing. You have your core American made top shelf guitars, that only need a few tweaks here and there. PRS and Fender for example have been very good at getting people into their brand with cheaper lines made outside the US. I'm sure a 700-1000 dollar import LP would sell like hotcakes, who knows maybe I'm wrong but for many people $2k and up for the entry level LP isn't an option. Same with PRS core models, SE and now S2 have been a gateway drug basically to the Core line for many buyers. But like the OP said, strip down the lineup and focus on what got you to be a top dog in the first place.

Oh, and fix the issue with the nut so the G string stays in tune for more than 30 seconds.

They already have a 700-1000 LP import, it's Epiphone. And they aren't going to fuck with that.

That's a very good point. I didn't think of that.

Knowing Henry, those people are long fired. Not because of the designs per se but just because he liked to fire everyone on a whim.

What OP said plus release limited edition baritone LP's, SG's and Explorers every so often.
