Shows what I know, I thought Steve Miller wrote that. This is better...

Did this guy listen to Clapton allot or was it the other way around. I hear influences there going in one of those directions

Difficult to say? I think players borrowed from everyone else in those days. Although he was blind, he could (IMO) out-play most anyone. His hand-vibrato was simply incredible! Whenever I'm in a rut musically, I just throw this on.

Great song. Clapton definately comes to mind in the solo-but I'm not familliar enough with the 70's guitar players to give proper credit where it's due.

Good grief the story behind this! :aww:

His follow-up album New Train was recorded in 1973 by Bearsville Records and was produced by Ben Sidran (keyboardist for the Steve Miller Band). New Train featured Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders, and The Persuasions. Albert Grossman, the owner of Bearsville Records (and best known as the manager of Bob Dylan), stopped release of the record after a dispute with Pena and his then-manager, Dr. Gunther Weil. Pena remained contractually obligated to Grossman, and was unable to record for another label. ... Sidran gave an unreleased copy of New Train to Steve Miller, who recorded "Jet Airliner" ... Pena's primary source of income in his later years were royalties from that single ... New Train was finally released in 2000, 27 years after it was recorded.
He died 5 years later having never recorded another note.

Luckily he got royalties from the Steve Miller recording!

I think something similar to this happened to Credence Clearwater Revival also.

That was awesome. And it proves that Steve Miller is even whiter than we thought. This was his most soulful number and he stole it.

Paul's lead playing is extremely expressive and tasteful. That's what it's all about, imo.

Cool bit of info and old tune. The guitar tone is great.

Story smacks of good old boy whitey screwing the brother over.

Wow, I wasn't aware of the raw deal he received. That really sucks. I prefer his version of jet airliner over millers. I think I started to really dislike it from yrs of radio overplay.

This is great.. I too just always assumed it was 100% a Steve Miller song.

Simply masterful! Paul does all the keyboard work on The River. Jeff "Skunk" Baxter plays pedal steel.

Cool.

Love the whole soul feel -notice how cool the rhythm guitar is and the over all groove-

OK - Stevie Miller got a little or a lot "whiter" on his version but listen to "Living in the USA" to hear Miller with more Soul....

I also just thought it was a Miller tune.

Cool Vibe on the Track for sure.

Cool song either way! but leave the word "stealing" for zeppelin. At least Steve Miller paid for it. ;)
