if you could play any guitar rig ever, who/when would it be?

This. Playing through a Diezel, Marshall, and Mesa simultaneously with a Les Paul would probably make me crap my pants, lol

This only makes sense to me for live rigs as studio stuff has so much processing from the recording process... So:

1.) Joe Holmes' rig from Ozzfest Tour
2.) EVH's rig from VHII tour
3.) Lynch' rig on Under Lock and Key Tour

Steve

Hmmm...

I have a few:
• Johnny Ramones rig on "Loco Live" for straight rock
• Gilmour's rig on "Pulse" for all around tones

For heavy tones it's gotta be either:
• James H's tone on "Live S*hit" or
• Andy LaRocque on "Abigail Live"

Would lean to andy's tone overall I think.

For me there are a bunch, but the ultimate would be to play through whatever the hell EVH had going on in the studio when they recorded Fair Warning. The tones on that album just haunt me.

I´ve always thought Cliffs of Dover is both a strat and a 335, they come and go thru the song.

I read it was a 335, but maybe you're right. That violin tone would be hard to get from single coils I think... whatever it is, it works for him. It's not a tone I'd like everyday, but he makes it sound magical.
Allegedly it was a 335 on the record but there are plenty of videos of him playing it with a Strat and the '300 lb violin'- tone is still there. And that would be my dream rig to play. The rig with the 2 Dual Showmans and the Dumble SSS...and the '57 Strat...and the wood block under the Chandler Tube Driver...and the rubber band on the fuzz...etc.

Zakk's No Rest For The Wicked rig.
He recorded that on a Marshall combo .... truth.

Aw come on. Shit!
I had a hard time believing that too ... it was a JCM-800 100 watt combo quadruple tracked i believe.

my own rigs, Bogner 101B, VHT 50 CL, Splawn QR, Marshall JCM800 2203 and Mesa/Boogie DC5 ;)

I've always had an odd thing and never really tried to copy anyones tone, even in cover bands. I think folks put way too much time in getting the effects and tone of their hero down when the notes and performance are more important to my ears.

I do like Gary Moore Corridors era, Vandenberg on his first 2 solo albums, Priest on Unleash in the East, Accepts Balls to the Walls etc. I also really like Yngwie neck pickup tone on his first 2 solo albums after his Alcatrazz ear ended.

EVH VH1, Akira Takasaki on Thunder in the East, Stryper Soldiers Under Command, Lynch ULAK, DiMartini on Invasion.

I love the sounds/tone EVH gets on Drop Dead legs, Girl Gone Bad, I'm the one, Hang'Em High,...

I don't play bass...but I'd love to play through Lemmys bass rig...that cat could plow the damn road like no other.

Hmmm, maybe it was a Voodoo modded JCM 800 (scratches chin)

-Brad Gilli's rig with OZZY-

-(the best live tone I've ever heard)-
