I'm pretty happy with my setup cause its powerful, easy to setup and fairly light (imho) for this 41 year old geezer/

Friedman Marsha
Port City OS 2x12 (love this because it's light)

I have a four space rack with a Gmajor 2 always in the loop, then a rack shelf with a RJM mini effect gizmo going in front of the amp.
The rack has a Koko boost, Whirlwind phaser and a Wilson Vibe going to into the front of the Marsha. I use the relay on the Gmajor to switch the Koko modes and an extra jack on the RJM to switch the clean on the Marsha.

I phantom power a Liquid foot Jr out of the RJM so no running power to the front of the stage (which always annoyed me).

I've had this setup for a couple years now and really feel no need to change it. I fantasize about walking in with an Axefx and a guitar, but the PA varies so much between gigs I think it would drive me nuts.

Thanks for the info. I've got some years on you so I'm wanting to stay as light as possible too... really, I want to keep it as simple as possible, but light doesn't hurt either.

What Furman model do you have? Just checked and those are spendy.

I bought the b-stock and so far so good.

They are spendy and hopefully you could get by without it.

If you don't want a regulator Bob, I have several Furman and Monster rack surge protectors, you are welcome to have one. :)

Thanks man, appreciate it. I've got a spare standard Furman, although I may not go the rack route at all so it may just keep collecting dust in my closet.

PS. Bob try a PedalPro
I'm going to hazard a guess here that Bob is not gonna toss $2,000 into the PedalPro regardless of how good it is...

Holy Shnikies... nope, that's not gonna happen. I think what I'm going to do is start putting together a modest pedal setup and give the Shiva a go. It's a great amp and really, when I was going back and forth with the D60 and Shiva yesterday I ruled it out because it's too "thick." Yeah, maybe a dumb reason, but it's got a roundness to it that you don't hear in a lot of amps which is of course a good quality, but I was dorking out on how it's not going to sound "authentic." I need to forget authentic, drop the cork into the trash and just worry about having a simple rig with good tone.

use what you got...now there's an idea   I say take both your amps and two 4x12's or two half stacks...pretty simple rig ;)

LOL... but seriously, the Shiva really should be able to pull it off. I'll just use pedals to juice the clean channel for a slightly crunchy tone and keep the gain down on the gain channel and hit it with pedals for higher gain. Should give me plenty of versatility.

Or, I could bring two half stacks and dual heads and rock the walls off.

Ya, dude! I'd go this route! Rock what ya got! If ya gotta add a few pedals, so be it, but I wouldn't get too worried about matching tones unless you start doing ALOT of gigs!

Yeah, I'm putting too much thought into it. Nobody in an audience is going to care about matching tones. If it's in the ballpark it's golden.

The Shiva or D60 is what I would use also ... Do not worry about spending a lot of money on gear till you see if you work out with the band & it is making money.

I bring my Sig-X if I am not sure what kind of sounds I might need or need a lot of versatility. Only amp I have played on that can cover just about anything.....

have fun with it Bob, I just joined a cover band, doing mostly 70's to current radio rock, was a little apprehensive at first, cuz like you I've been all about original stuff for years, I'm playing bass in this outfit, and have a blast.... been learning all kinds of fun stuff, Thin Lizzy, Sammy Hagar, Night Ranger, etc.... and like you, I've been inspired like crazy to play, played my first gig sunday with only 4 rehearsals, and had a BLAST..... have fun with it, I am.

not about the gear, but thought I'd throw in some words of encouragement. ;)

Yeah, I think I'm going to dig it. I'm learning a lot of tunes I've loved over the years. Learned So Good To See You from Cheap Trick this morning. Great tune.

right on, yeah I learned the live version of Boys are back in town, took me a couple days, but I got it down, fun as hell to play. our first set was:

Cowboy Song - Thin Lizzy
Boys r back - thin Lizzy
Heavy Metal - Sammy Hagar
Snortin Whiskey - Pat Travers
don't tell me you love me - Night ranger
Foxy Lady - Hendrix
Symphony of Destruction - Megadeth
Man in the box - AIC
Space Lord - Monster Magnet

went over pretty well, had fun learning them, the only ones I already knew were Megadeth and AIC. had 4 rehearsals to get them down, with new musicians I've never played with before, but we pulled it off. Had a lot of fun, first gig I've played in over 10 yrs. felt good, forgot how much I missed playing live....

just a small bar here in Amarillo, it was a benefit for a guy here who got injured and can't work right now...... maybe 50 people or so. still was fun, crowd seemed to like us.

hmmm.... can you call 50 people a crowd?

That's kind of why I recommended the RP1000. That is, if your shiva has a loop. The pedal, 4 cables and a lot of flexibilty. Gainfreak is the one who turned me on to this setup. Once you get everything dialed in, it's super simple. And, the RP is really easy to dial in, too. Which is good for me because I'm not really a tweaker.

I used to be able to sit for hours tweaking a rack setup but have found over the last 10 years that I like about 3-5 knobs on any given device. That's partly why I'm thinking about just putting a small pedalboard together. A couple/few ODs, chorus, delay and maybe a reverb (Shiva has spring reverb). I'm really liking the sound of the TC Electronics Corona and Flashback. I'll bet their little reverb is great too.

Just tossing out a suggestion for lighter/small cabs: I like the Marshall 1965 cabs a lot. Much smaller and lighter than a 4x12. Plenty of low end IMHO. Only problem is a full sized head will hang off the edges. Shiva might fit, I think they're kinda small box ish? I know a 19" standard rack fits on the 1965 perfectly.

The other guitar player in my cover band uses a Shiva 2x12 combo and a Red pedal, I use a Einstein (w/ch 1 mode mod) and a KoKo boost > FL 2x12. And we cover everything from 60's to modern heavy stuff. A Shiva with some pedals will cover that ground just fine.
