I would say use the bare minimum to get the job done and that makes you comfortable
and call it a day.
Hopes this helps

This is definitely where I'm leaning, of course I'm a tone snob too so it's not going to be a Crate combo. Nonetheless, I want to make things as easy as possible and am thinking a two channel amp with a pedalboard is where I should go. I'm going to spend more time with my Shiva setup. Maybe I've got exactly what I need already and just need a pedalboard.

By all means make your self happy with your tone!
I guess what I was trying to say is as long as people are
dancing and your rig doesn't sound like a herd of goats in a
wood chipper, your job is done.
Shiva and a decent board should be fine

Yep, didn't think the sentence was that ambiguous.
"From the 40s to today. Every genre of music - every tone under the sun."

I just got confused because the comment about "40s to today" is followed by "every genre of music". Both statements are talking about types of music but I thought the first was a time period you were playing and the second was indicating types of music. I mean, it's really not that big of a stretch to interpret it that way and assume a mistake was made... Anyway, I was just confused... Not trying to bust balls... Carry on...

So, you've been playing since the 40s? Am I missing something here? If you were 16 years old at the time and played your first gig in 1949, you'd be 80 years old today... You must mean something else?

He obviously is talking about music from the 40's onward...

For what the op is talking about, the Axe-II is a no brainer

Nah, I was actually confused and interpreted what he was saying wrong...

My bad - I figured you were trying to point out something obvious - that apparenty wasn't obvious. Damn that lack of tone in the written word

I really think you should give the PedalPro a try if that is the road you are thinking. It was much less than the pedal boards I have put together, and much easier. It is basically a pedal board with digital control. 30 day return policy...

I know I'm always harping on it, but I did the same with the Two-Notes stuff years ago and it is well received finally. It can go in front, loop, or even stand alone with a power amp. 2 cords - done. You shouldn't just dismiss it. :)

But, but, but if I use a PedalPro how am I going to build myself a kickin' quilted Maple pedalboard?????

Thanks for the info. I"m going to check it out.

No worries. It's all fun. But because of the absurdity of one option (that I'm 80 - since you've met me), then the ambiguity is greatly diminished and the obvious connotation would be that I was referring to music from the '40s rather than I was playing in the '40s. :)

PS. Bob try a PedalPro

I'm going to hazard a guess here that Bob is not gonna toss $2,000 into the PedalPro regardless of how good it is...

Holy Shnikies... nope, that's not gonna happen. I think what I'm going to do is start putting together a modest pedal setup and give the Shiva a go. It's a great amp and really, when I was going back and forth with the D60 and Shiva yesterday I ruled it out because it's too "thick." Yeah, maybe a dumb reason, but it's got a roundness to it that you don't hear in a lot of amps which is of course a good quality, but I was dorking out on how it's not going to sound "authentic." I need to forget authentic, drop the cork into the trash and just worry about having a simple rig with good tone.

I'm pretty happy with my setup cause its powerful, easy to setup and fairly light (imho) for this 41 year old geezer/

Friedman Marsha
Port City OS 2x12 (love this because it's light)

I have a four space rack with a Gmajor 2 always in the loop, then a rack shelf with a RJM mini effect gizmo going in front of the amp.
The rack has a Koko boost, Whirlwind phaser and a Wilson Vibe going to into the front of the Marsha. I use the relay on the Gmajor to switch the Koko modes and an extra jack on the RJM to switch the clean on the Marsha.

I phantom power a Liquid foot Jr out of the RJM so no running power to the front of the stage (which always annoyed me).

I've had this setup for a couple years now and really feel no need to change it. I fantasize about walking in with an Axefx and a guitar, but the PA varies so much between gigs I think it would drive me nuts.

Forgot to mention, I also have a furman regulator in my small rack...best money I've spent! I gigged for about a year without it and had plenty of nights (and rehearsals) where everything just sounded crappy.
Regulated power fixed all the issues.

The only negative is it's fairly heavy.

Thanks for the info. I've got some years on you so I'm wanting to stay as light as possible too... really, I want to keep it as simple as possible, but light doesn't hurt either.

What Furman model do you have? Just checked and those are spendy.

If you have the means and the cash to go for an Axe FX II, you should really do so. tube amps are great for there obvious characteristics in sound, and nothing compares to having a blaring cab at your back. BUT as im sure i dont have to tell you carrying all that shit around is a bitch. with the Axe FX you just need some rack mount to keep it safe, clean, and organized. can you imagine only having to haul that around to every show? AWESOME.

Also as far as the cover band route the Axe FX is definitely your best bet due to the tone matching technology installed in the FX II's, assuming that you're trying to get as close to the original song as tonally possible. I have been able to play around with both and i just cant fathom anyone that can afford buying an Axe FX, not doing so. But, its all in choice and preference. just my two cents to sway you towards the most efficient route. Good luck on whatever you choose! :D

Your Shiva and some pedals, you are good to go!!

I think the best part of using that rig is that it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful in paisley.

Ah, I understand. I just saw people mentioning the Axe, and figured that was the price range. Unfortunately my last 2 pedal boards ended up over $2k so that was my frame of reference. :)

I'm looking for all ideas so no worries. If the Axe-FX were in play, I'd end up having to sell amps to get it.

I bought the b-stock and so far so good.

They are spendy and hopefully you could get by without it.
