I'm fucking OLD (my Les Paul is heavy)

Fuck man. I had practice on Sunday for 2.5 hours and my back was fucking killing me when I left. And my goddamn rib hurts from where the fucking thing was poking me (need to adjust the strap lol).

Some of you guys might have seen me post about a guitar maintenance class I attended in January. During weeks 3 and 4 (class is just once a week), I did fret work on this guitar. When I got it, the A string had dead frets (other frets were high). Knowing that I was attending this class, I was happy to bring this guitar in to learn about how to fix it. By the end of week 4, I'd filed/leveled, crowned, and polished all of the frets. We filed the 6th string nut slot to lower it a bit. We raised the bridge on the bass side (I got a heavy right hand and play 52s in drop D) which allows me to beat down a bit harder on the strings. Truss rod adjusted to get the neck straight. Fingerboard conditioned. Intonated. She played great, but holy fuck is she heavy.

That is interesting as hell. Never thought about taking a guitar class.

Also, send me that heavy guitar. I will put ot to good use

Weight use to not bother me as long as the guitar balanced well, but man these days I do feel the weight after a few minutes. I blame all the fucking snow shoveling. Hopefully it passes.

I played Spector Basses for years. I know heavy. If you have good posture and set it up comfortably, it shouldn't be an issue. Granted, the Spector body shape is the most comfortable instrument on the planet, but still...

[10.5 lbs.]

Complaining a LP is too heavy is like saying a Ferrari is too fast.
Nobody buys a JMP Marshall for "cleans".
Nobody buys a Ferrari to do the "speed limit".
Nobody buys a LP to be "lightweight".

You should track down an old Les Paul Studio Lite with the Ebony Fretboards. I always wanted one, played them many times, very comfortable guitar and sounds like a Paul at nearly half the weight.

I was super happy about this month-long class. It was pretty informal. The luthier I know hosts these small weekly classes once every so often (when he feels like it) and gives us hands-on experience with fret-leveling, nut filing, intonation, etc. I'm sure I could have learned all of the same info from YouTube, but I really like being under the supervision of experts when I'm trying stuff for the first time.

I used to judge those who thought LPs were heavy. Now I'm just old.
FWIW, my Trad Pro V has a much beefier strap on it and the guitar never feels as heavy, so I might try another strap as well.

Def need to adjust the strap. The biggest reason I started raising my strap in the first place was to combat the weight of my LP lol.

First world fuckin problems lol. It's not my first, it's not my only, and it won't be my last LP lol.

Try a LP Axcess ! Lighter, belly cut, super comfy ! Might do the trick for you...

Had no idea these were lighter. Thanks!

I always see these lites and never give them any thought. I'll pick one up next time I see one at the store. Thanks!

I didn’t get it for that specific reason, but having a Thinline tele has helped a lot for getting through long rehearsals etc.

I love my gold top LP, but after 45 minutes I’m reaching for something lighter when I can.

Get that shit the fuck outta this 24.75" supremacy thread!
JK. I have a few semis that I could bring, but we're all amp distortion all the time and I don’t feel like taming those frequencies. Caveman/neanderthal shit. The real move is to bring any of the explorers that I have which are 2-4 pounds lighter I think (I actually haven't weighed anything).

I just got one of those "Zero G" straps you see all over Facebook. I'm going to try it soon with my Les Pauls. I'll report back if I can remember.

Thank you! I've been racking my brain trying to remember the name of those fucking things that I do indeed see all over FB and IG. Please report back!

I've managed to collect several Gibson LP Standards that are 8 1/2 pounds or less. Lightest is 7 pounds 15 ounces. I enjoy their tone a bit more too -- a little more snap.

A wider strap distributes the weight over a little more area too.

Yeah, I think at one point in this thread I mentioned that I have another LP Trad Pro V that I use with a 3" or 4" strap and it's considerably better on the shoulders/back when playing.
