Rockstah over at the metro site had a great PPIMV that sounded amazing, so yes, I think that you can get a tone like that by using one but cranking it does add some extra magic IMHO lol

Greenbacks are definitely a must IMHO. Either old h30's or re-issue h30's or greenback 25's will get you that tone. 75's will sound to glassy, bright, shrill and scooped and v30's will be ear fatiquing IMHO.
Just for the record, I tried my Metro amp though all of the above speakers and for my liking, it sounded best withe greenies or h30's. You will be shocked by how much the speakers account for that tone

i'll definitely have to look into that PPIMV if i decide to take the leap for this amp.
Which Metro amp are you using and how do you like it?

Im using one of the first Metro kit amps with all zoso caps put to Ralle's specs. I love it but I'll more then likely have Mike Fortin Mod it for me later on :D

"The touch" = you are going to fight that amp for even the most simple licks until you get used to it.

I know that question wasn't for me but I have a Metro 50 Watt Plexi and it sounds kickass. And just to show you how people's opinions vary, I hate the way that amp sounds through greenbacks. I bought a Marshall 1960AX loaded with gb's and the sound was piercing. I sold that cab immediately.  My broken in v30's sounded much, much better. That being said, I think h30's are probably the way to go. The high end in those speakers is so smooth it really works for the plexi style amps.

I'd give a 50 watter some consideration here, they sound great and will deliver the goods at more manageable volumes.

There are so many types of greenbacks and that was probably more then likely the culprit. lol Then you have the cab it was loaded in and the grill cloth. My greenbacks are anything but piercing but Id be lying if I didn't say that I have heard greenbacks that would take your face off LMAO. I have the english re-issues from about 94 and they are broken in.

With that said..juts to give an example There are the original greenbacks pre and post rola which have different cones/versions then you have the Re-issues, the chinese re-issues, the Heritage series etc etc. There are so many variables lol.

interesting. what's the reasoning for that?

1-2 gain stages missing, way lower compression levels. That open roar and razor cut through the mix is the lack of compression imo and that creates a tougher amp to play.

Once you can get the hang of it.......I have not yet   ......the rewards are great imo.

sounds like a real bitch of an amp
Maybe you said already, but what amp are you using?

would boosting it help with some of the "touch" aspect?

Theres no lie these kind of amps cut through the mix like butter... My heritage colonial is pretty close to this, though the sound is a bit different because I'm using G12H30's and I switched the tubes to 6550's, thing breaths fire volume wise, but honestly not THAT much gain, I know I get more headroom from the 6550's but I've got a Diezel Einstein with EL34's so I figured a 6L6 family member sound would be a nice change. Those tubes have low end out the ass...

Rockstah's approach to playing through that amp is also contibuting to how good it sounds. he's got the touch and feel for sure...IMO.

get the kit and a PPIMV I think your at what $1600. if you need to go cheaper get the ceriatone and upgrade on the OT PT

if you want that tone then you need to get Metroamp good stuff.

and if youre a higher gain guy you just cascade the front like a 2203 and make sure you do the post phase invertor master. You can make one input stock and the other hot (cascaded). You get a nice mix that way. I like to change the normal channel to the bright channel so your cascading bright into bright or better known as High Treble I think. I forget what those ones say ? normal and bright or normal and high treble which is it.

That's what my wizard vintage classic has been doing to me lately, dear god it has been an open handed slap in the face for me. But the tone is awesome, I just need to learn to be able to use the damn thing.

Also, the amp in the youtube clip sounds fantastic!

thanks for all the responses guys!!

i'm curious about the Friedman modded (kitchen sink) '76 JMP that's currently in the classifieds right now. How does something like that stack up against this amp? Would that be able to pull off these kind of tones or are they just two separate beasts entirely?

ask dave hes here somewhere. I think his starting point is like a 68 spec type thing

duhh  thanks for the reminder man!

if hes out of your price range I do a lot of mods as well. Jose MV's diodes no diodes high gain mods, cascade mods for older super leads PPIMV etc etc etc. thanx

That Friedman is totally different. Tons of preamp gain and more modern sounding. I haven't played that particular JMP, but I have played a Marsha with the kitchen sink and saturation mod. The only mode that sounds relatively close to a plexi, IMO, is the C45 mode which is very cool. Withe saturation switch "on" in the BE mode, the tone is  .

My '73 stays on the BE with the fat switch.

I love this thing.

yeah, i've always been kind of blown away by the Friedman modded marshall sounds which is why this is pretty tempting.
Could this amp do lower gain stuff pretty well or is it made for more high gain/modern kind of sounds?
