My Neumann NDH-20 broke. The Ear Pads, to be precise. With no force or misuse whatsoever.
Replacement Pads are 49.- €
I got upset. Dismissed Neumann altogether including the KH310 Monitors i have and ordered a pair of Genelec 8040bpm with the matching stands and a new pair of AKG271 MK-2.
Sounds silly, doesn't it?
I thought for a while about trying out the 8040 again before, to be fair (to myself :D ). Mostly because of the sharper phantom centre and less phase canceletions since theres only 1 crossover point at 3khz in the Genelec compared to 2 in the Neumanns (650hz and 2khz). The Neumanns are also a bit on the soft side.
We can now either talk about silly impuslive buying decisions or Studio Monitors.
I could end up with new Monitors, or simply with a new pair of Headphones.
My old AKGs lasted for 15 Years and they are still working, but are a bit beat up.

Get a pair of replacement pads and you are good to go with your AKGs

Yeah, probabIy 😅 I have the KH310 at the Moment. Since 2017, to be precise. Technically it would be a downgrade. But i don't really see it that way. The Stands arrived today, the 8040bpm will arrive tomorrow. I would have preferred it the other way around 🙈

The Neumann NDH-20 broke for no other reason than shitty Material. They cost over 500.- new.
The AKG lastet 15 Years. It's 119.- new, comes with two sets of Ear-Pads, and two Cables.
49.- for new Pads for the Neumann would have been the simple and pragmatic solution, that's right - and i know that.
But now i'm actually looking forward to comparing the Genelec 8040bpm to the Neumann KH310.
Stands arrived today. Speakers will come tomorrow.

AKGs now are garbage, don't fall into the trap of believing your old set are indicative of the quality of the new ones. I bought a set of K702s for 100 and even I felt ripped off at that price. The headband is so hard it makes your head hurt, the earpads aren't soft and the crappy rubber bands that "adjust" the fitment of the headband aren't sized properly so the one side has no adjustment and maxes out immediately. Also the sound profile of them is "interesting" at best and they need an EQ though that is preference I guess.

FYI the real AKG people founded Austrian Audio.
 
I’m really liking the KH310. Did you use yours with the KH750 sub and room correction with MA1? Genelecs are great too, can’t go wrong there.

I tried the 702 and also did not like them. Or maybe it was the 712. Or both. Can't remember exactly.
Had the 872 too. The 271 MK2 are still just fine. They arrived today. Cable is a bit thinner than on my 2010 model which was also made in China. I had a look at the Austrian Audio stuff. Some old Engineers from AKG founded it. I learned that recently. Pretty much like the Blackstar-Guys, that came from Marshall. What Headphones do you have now?

No Sub, no room correction. I did a lot of A/B today. So far, so good. The Answer to the "so what??" comes later. :)

I think the MA1 correction (you have to get their mic with it) and the KH750 is crucial with that setup. It unloads 80hz and down from the KH310 to the 750 and really opens up the mains. The MA1 correction is just a game changer after that. It completely changes the way those monitors sound and translate. In fact, I would only ever recommend the Neumanns to someone as a whole system, because that's how it's designed to operate.

The 750 came way later. And you would need 2 of them.
I'm not a fan of the room correction stuff. And also not of Class D Amps.
I had a Genelec 8050 + 7070 Set before the Neumanns. I wanted to get rid of the Subwoofer.
The Tests today was pretty interesting.
What Interface do you have?

No, one KH750 can support both 310s. And you're right about it coming later. But I just wanted to put my two cents in on these and let you know you're not really getting the real experience with your monitors without the proper setup. I'm coming from years with ATCs prior to these so they're not the only great monitors I've worked with. Also a three way monitor will always paint a clearer picture for your, especially in the mid range, than a two way. But in the end, this is your setup, go with what works for you! Always dig your tones and recordings so I'm sure your ear will guide you to the right place. My interface is the Apogee Symphony Mk2 SE.

I've got way too many but mostly beyerdynamic, sennheiser and audio-technica. I think beyerdynamic is the best for durability and the replacement parts are also the cheapest though whether people like their tuning is personal preference. Audio-technica models tend to vary in sound a lot from model to model with more premium models not necessarily sounding "better" but different. I also don't do any music production stuff on mine so I wouldn't comment on any for that task.

Also the sweet spot for 3-way compared to a 2-way is always something to keep in mind.
