I just sent out my '98 Marshall SPL to Martin Golub to have his Lead Mod and a Tube FX loop installed. I love Doug Aldrich's tone so hopefully I can capture some of that. Hope to see it in about 2 months.

I demand clips when it returns
May I ask you how much you paid for it?

The basic mod is $550 and the loop is $350. Yea, I definately will have to get some clips together.

Dang, that's pretty pricey for a loop.I had one of those metro zero loss loops installed for 140. That included the parts. Works perfectly too.

Schaf

Yea, I'm well aware of it. I'm still contemplating the Metro loop.

I hope it only takes 2 months....I was quoted that and it took closer to 5.

Hmmmm............. nice.

I have a Golub modded marshall, and while it is only great for one thing.. it is very good at a few other tones.
But if you are looking for a quite different take on what Mark cameron does for lead work, then you will absolutely love what Martin Golub does as well.
I think of the Golub modded marshall as the Pony Express.
It is made to ride hard and go, go, go.
It will be worth the wait...... I do not for the life of me understand why more guys are not sending amps to Martin.
Even if you do wait a bit longer.
Hell, he is actually sending them all back, as far as I know.
A big thing to remember with Martin's amp mods is the amp must be biased just right to sound the best, There is a night and day difference in what you will have or think you did not get if the bias is not where it should be.
More so with the mods he does than other amps I have got in my building done by other builders. ;)

When you say biased just right, what are we talking % wise?

The cool thing with mine was just do not have it set real cold. with Martin's mods if it is too cold it will give ya that damn crossover distortion. I talked with Psychodave through PM's back then and I liked 70 percent, but I also liked 65 percent and if I remember correctly right around there is where I chose to leave it.
Also, the right pre amp tubes make all the difference with his work. I ended trying about all of them out there and the GT branded 12ax-7 c's/ chinese 9th gens. were the best for my amp. they were the premium gold select ones.
With those I had the most useable gain from the gain control pot as far as from start to finish in being able to dial in a certain amount low to high.
You know in otherwords, what was okay without being to buzzy or fizzy. natural to saturated, and beyond after two o'clock on the gain control.....   I thought the tung-sols and other russian pre's just gave it that extra edge they are known for yet the Golub did not need anymore help attaining that bite all on it's own.
Martin's mods are HOT! DAMN HOT! You'll see!

Wow, I'm really getting stoked now. How's the bottom end? Enough of it and tight?

I think so. But keep in mind you are seeking Doug Aldrich's tone and that is a mid based cut of sorts.
Not uber like but more, marshall gets the job done as usual.

That's fine with me. Doug's tone is sweet. I wonder if I can get his fingers along with the mod?

are the mods done with gold plated components? damn! you guys must make a lot more than I do.

I'm thinking the same thing!

No offense to any guy who is doing something truly unique ( i have yet to see something like that ) but as far as mods go, were all doing very similar things. Adding tube gain stages, fine tuning existing satges, jose mv's with the diodes, converting a cathode following tone stack to a plate driven tone stack, even the so called hottest ticket in town , the new AFD is just duplicating v1b on a 2203, using a lower value like 220k on both voltage dividers etc. Cascade mods, RR mods, one wire mods all these different names for basically the same thing..........shop around, do a little reading, youll be glad you did. I whip out three high gain mods in the past 2 weeks. 3 months for anything he should be building you a new amp.

is this the guitarist who played for Billy Squire? didnt they rent #39 or one of those SIR amps. If so then he can thank Tim Caswell. He most likely just penciled the circuit for later. Prolly a different dude though. Sounded familiar
