It's only a sacrifice when you're conscripted.

The military is a fully paid profession entered into by one's choice. Did I sacrifice myself applying for jobs and then getting one.

If getting shot at floats their boat and shooting other people then that's their free choice and they get paid for it, nothing sacrificial about it.

I honestly can't see a sacrifice there.
