Is anybody using a Maxon VOP9?

Anyone?

I want an OD820, but the casing is just enormous. Wonder if the VOP9 is as good, just in a smaller enclosure.

Does it keep the low-end intact? Does it add a bit of attack when boosting a high-gain amp?

What are you guys' experiences and opinions with it?

Thanks!

I was in the exact same mindset as you a few years ago and bought the VOP9 to try in front of my Single Recto head as a boost replacement for my OD9 and 808 pedals. I wanted the 820 based on clips I had heard, but it was too big for my board. To answer your question, yes to all of those things, but after playing it for 5 minutes or so I put the OD9 back for comparison and it completely destroyed the VOP in terms of the overall tone and boost performance. This was with the 18V dip switch setting on the VOP. I still lust after an 820 though, and it does sound more open and better than the VOP in clips I've heard. Who knows if I would actually prefer it to the OD9, however. The OD9 cuts lows, but it slams the amp really well and keeps things feeling precise due to the voicing. The 808 is sharper on the top end, and more gritty/messy in texture, but also has a more natural quality. The OD9 just seems to work better in my setup for my taste.

If you can solder, the BYOC Green Pony is based on the OD820. It is pretty small, and is a cool Tubescreamer variant overall.

Thank you, dudes! I'll look into the Green Pony.

I've already owned an OD9 (and an OD808), and for that job (with my amps), I preferred my TS808. But I want something that doesn't cut bass this time around. :)

BTW, I understand your love for an OD9 in front of a Recto. It would definitely work well. You should also try an SD-1!

I've considered the SD-1. Do you know if the pedal stays in the former state after cutting power? My Maxon pedals do this and all true bypass pedals do as well as far as I know. I like for all always on pedals to be already engaged when plugging in my pedalboard.

My SD-1w and CE-2w both do that. They always power up in their on state.
