As far as a solo guitar piece not in the context of an actual song (either vocal or instrumental)?

If the answer is yes, I'd say "Eruption" and "Spanish Fly" would be 1 and 2 on my list...

If you are including solos in the context of actual songs (either vocal or instrumental), then there are many I love more, some of which have been mentioned.

I don't think you can compare the two though myself. How do you compare "Eruption" to the solo in "Stairway to Heaven". That solo is perfect in the context of the build up of that song. Take it out of that context as just the solo with nothing behind it and no way it would have the same effect... A solo guitar piece and a solo in the context of a full song are different things to me...

Steve

My thoughts exactly.
Great minds, ya know...

Steve
My thoughts exactly as well...there goes your "great minds" theory

How about something different like the solo in Limelight by Rush?

yeah, Eruption and Spanish Fly are kind of like solos to an album as a whole. More instrumental I suppose but we don't need to get too technical here.

part of what makes a solo a favorite for you may not make it a favorite for someone else.

to me, it is more about the emotion evoked when listening to it, not the technical prowess per say.

that said, love me Stairway to Heaven, Comfortably Numb, Night Train, Mr Crowley, Layla, More Than A Feeling, Cliffs of Dover, It's Not Love, guitar solos.

I'm a 80's guy for the most part, and I could make good arguments for the "Sweet Child O Mine" or Lynch's "Night by Night" solos.
But the first time I heard Dimebag Darrell play the solo in Cemetery Gates, I knew that was one of the best solos I would ever hear.

Mine would be "Unchain the night" by Dokken....
or
"No one like you" by Scorpions...

Not necisarily the"the best" but for fret board prowess this is worth a mention, extra points for the uniform.

No EVH. I'm boycotting VH because of Rig-Talk. ;)

The solos in this song are magnificent, though most here probably won't appreciate it.

First solo at 2:47. Second solo begins about 3:51.

Mastodon is my VH. I love these drunks. Great band. The opening solo/riff after the intro always gets me.

I want Sleeping Giant played at my funeral. Amazingly heavy tune. Favorite album too!

I love Eruption but I've always thought Spanish Fly was more musical. The way he exits the tapping portion and returns to the tapped harmonic line that echo's the intro is perfect...

Eruption was obviously a game changer, but I don't consider it a solo in the classic sense in that it was not a part of a song...it's a solo and nothing more.

I still contend that the most well constructed classic solo in the history of electric guitar is "Stairway to Heaven"...simply perfection within the context of that song. "Hotel California", "Comfortably Numb", "Mr Crowley", and "Sultans of Swing" all get an honorable mention for me.

winner winner chicken dinner on all acounts

+1!

Best in song solo - Mr. Crowley. Lots tied for second.
But no denying that Eruption for what it is. Changed the direction of music. And I'd say it's not a solo. It's a song. One of the best of all time.

You're all wrong... Revelations (Mother Earth) is the be all, end all for guitar solos. You're done. Randy wins.

Wow. Loads of great solos listed. I like everything from classic rock to death metal. I couldn't argue with any of the songs/solo's listed.

For me this one gave me chills when I saw them play it live.

Keep the solo's coming. I love listening to them while working. There are a bunch I haven't heard in a long time.

And I can't seem to get the video to display.... link only. Floods solo from Pantera

Hey dude

Let me fix that for ya...

Edit: aw - I see you fixed it. Kind of.

(also for some reason Train of Consequences by Megadeth is jumping out at me - although it is not particularly technical or awe-inspiring. )

Plenty great ones mentioned already. If it evokes an emotion and adds depth to the song, I'm all bout it

Two Tickets was a pretty rad solo. Thanks!

Here is one I really dig. If you consider it a solo or jamming...

Eruption? No

One of my favorites that hasn't been mentioned
Marty - Tornado of Souls.

A great solo is relative to the rest of the song and how well it adds to the whole.
