Is it possible?

Checking out the specs of the tweaker 88 on the Egnater website, I see a nice little switch on the back by the FX loop for instrument/line level setting. It seems like this would be something very handy to have with the Mod50, since whne using a head, I prefer to run plain old pedals in the loop, and not rack gear.

Is this even a possibilty? A possible mod, or upgrade to an existing amp?

Forgive my (massive) ignorance on the issue, but I know the Mod 50s have 2 effects loops - 1 serial and 1 parallel. Is that designed to deal with your issue or is that separate entirely?


Great thread idea. Don't want to hijack it, but I have seen voicing switches on some older Egnater/Randall modules and thought how cool it would be if that was an option on future dual modules. Kind of like a "raw/smooth" switch.

I know this is overkill. But, adding a pigtronix keymaster to bring the loop to pedal level was the best thing I ever did for my mod50. I understand the gain stage concept as well as the purpose of line level loops. However, it limits us from some very cool loop based effects and in my opinion most digital processors take away from the tone of a mod50 when used in the serial loop. This solved it for me...

Just a thought.

True. But, it does the job better than anything else I tried... I got it from MF with all intentions of putting it back in the box if it didn't do the job. I set it up, plugged in a crappy old Boss delay, turned the loop on and off a couple of times and promptly threw out the shipping box, registered the product and stored the box it came in.

Love the Mod50. Hate not being able to use things like e capistan or analog tremolo, etc in the loops. It was worth every penny to me.

Been on this board quite a few years. Until now the standard answer has been to buy an Ebtech line level shifter. And if you desire a $79 solution, there it is. BUT, I quit using it quite a while back. Found a rack mount unit that was suitable for delays & chorus, which has a bonus feature of a full 3 band parametric, which is handy. So, I got the Ebtech out the other day just to compare agian. Even though the unit does adjust levels properly, tone seemed to loose a bit of high end goodness. Didn't really care for it. I am going to run that experiment again later today if I have time.

Chris you are pointing out the only downfall of the MOD 50 at this point. When Eganater came out with it the best delays were all rack mount. Today however, all the top units on the market are pedal style and that is pretty the only thing pros are using these days. You need to able to do that, so I think the Pigtronixs is a completely perfect solution. Bringing this back to the original point, if you had Egnater or any solid amp tech do the mod, you be looking at $150+ for that job anyway. Maybe even the full $250. Trying the Pigtronixs makes that a no brainer and I for one have it on my "BUY" list.

The more I think about the Keymaster, the better of an idea it becomes. Looks like you could also create an effects loop for your no-loop amps, like my vintage Marshall JMP that I don't want to drill holes in for a loop. Just run your mic into this, then loops, then out to console. Perfect! Certainly NOT a one trick pony!

Still, it would be nice to have this feature as part of the Mod50, since even the lower end (price wise) Egnater products have it.

They Keymaster sound pretty cool. I love hearing and learning about new (well, at least new to me) products like that.

Even if more expensive than the Ebtech, if it sounds better I think it'd be worth it, plus it can do way more than the ebtech can. The mod50 kills, so anything that keeps it that way is always welcome.

Well, Just a quick update... I bought a D/D module from a rig-talker and tried it tonight with the keymaster in the loop. This is first module that distorted it with the channel master way up. However, it worked perfectly when I turned the master down to 2 oclock. No tone loss (to my ears). I was also informed that it can run on a 24v power supply if you need more headroom. The Mod50 has the hottest loop I have ever used...

Another cool thing to use it for... Recording clean DI guitar for reamping while feeding an amp or modeler at the same time. Slick little box and half the price of the radial reamp kit.

I was thinking about the initial post regarding a modification to the loop... It makes more sense to me to have balanced cables if your pedalboard is far away from the amp. So, the keymaster makes more sense than a pedal level loop IMO.

The mod50 still makes me smile when I play through it...

Can't really modify the MOD50 loop for pedals. I have recently designed a box to adapt high level loops to work with any pedals. It is powered with a wall wart (no battery) has in/out/send/return jacks with send and return levels. Easily solves the pedals in the loop issue once and for all. Planning to produce a small number of them that will sell direct at $150 (USD). I wan't to get an idea of how many to make before ordering parts, boxes, boards etc. Any interest?

I'm pretty happy with my effects unit but yes, Bruce, put me down for one. Let us know when they are ready and I will purchase. Too many cool pedal delays out there to not have one if you're going to make it. I don't ever plan on not having a MOD50, so it'd be dumb for me not to go for this.

Ebtech LLS is passive and sucks tone, the gains in the amps get out of balance with it.

I have this little active unit that also reduces cables to the amp to 1 for the loop. Sounds great and has enough boost/cut on both, send and return, to match any situation. Just a great product!
