the best distortion pedal, or what?!!?! :thumbsup:

Picked up a heavily used, quite beat up actually, DS-1 for $27.

Put it in front of a clean(ish) Peacemaker, and wow! Great Hard Rock/Metal tones. Yes, I was playing loud.

Anyway...........
 
It's pretty good for the money if you ask me. The tone stack needs work though, it's responsible mainly for the rumble and fizz associated with the pedal. Changing the tone stack can result in a smoother more full sound with more mids.
 
Did you get a MIJ or MIT DS-1?

Like a lot of dirt pedals, the secret with the DS-1 from what I understand is to run it into an amp that is breaking up or about to break up. Sounds like you did that if you were playing your amp loud.

I haven't play a DS-1 is at least 10 years and at the time used it into a clean amp, like I do most of the time with my dirt pedals. Now learning to ask if the amp is clean or breaking up when I ask about dirt pedals....
 
Never liked it stock.
Mont Allum is offering a nice DIY mod, Keeley is too bass heavy for me. (I mainly ply humbucker equipped guitars, sounds good with single colis)
The best one is the Analogman mod with the midrange knob. That makes this cheap pedal to a truly great one.
 
I have never found a use for them. I did the Keeley SEM/Ultra mods to the one I have and it just sits in a drawer. I should probably get rid of it...
 
If you use it like a tubescreamer it kills. Level maxed/ dist to taste.
 
Do your amp's tone knobs stop working when using this pedal?

got a jap one and it doesnt do it for me ,, good value for money if you get a new one , but for the front end of an amp i would rather use the sd-1 , satriani and vai used them for ages though .

FWIW, it's made in Taiwan. There's no Level knob, either. The silver center of the Tone knob is missing, as well. It sounds better than the Crunch Box, too (unless you're going for John Sykes).

I'm sure he has mad skills, but usually those types of players can make almost any gear sound decent or good. I mean, some great guitar tones can be had from a JCM 900 but it's by no means the greatest amp ever. In fact, most people seem to hate em...

There are sooo many better distortion and overdrive pedals. A good player can make any decent gear sound well, decent.

I used to think the same 'bout 900's, till I played one in a live setting. Snake from Skid Row used it right after me, and it still sounded great. Better is subjective, I'm-a-guessin'. I have an OCD, MI Crunch Box, Tube Screamer, and now this DS1. This cheap POS just did exactly what I was looking for without trying. I love the hair/sizzle/fuzz/whateveryouwanttocallit in the top end, and the boominess in the lows was easily dialed out. I actually found it refreshing that it wasn't a nasally midrange humpy thing, and that it didn't remove all the bass when engaged.
Probably not the best for swithching from clean to dirty a lot, but if you leave it on all the time....... :rock:

Yup, if it works for the forum famous Billy "sexified" Bogner it is good enough for me. Mark is without doubt one of the few I listen to tone wise and the dude can bring it like nobody else.

Plus he can sing and is a sexy bitch that makes Barzini weak in the knees.

Bought one used when I was 16, still have it. It's old and nasty looking and kicks ass!
 
Gary Moore also used one did he not? He got some killer cut with that pedal and Marshalls. I keep meaning to pick one up used or new for 40$ and seeing what it does in front of my amps.Right now it is the cheapo bad monkey for me.
