The best one is the Analogman mod with the midrange knob. That makes this cheap pedal to a truly great one.
+1 .....love the midrange knob.

This "shoot out" is still one of the best for me to use as a reference.. you will notice the expensive pedals really aren't that much better than the cheapies! The boss stuff sounds great as a boost. My favourite is the Gov'ner and the turbo overdrive. DS-1 sounds very good too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDHIqs8J ... re=related

Do your amp's tone knobs stop working when using this pedal?

Hope this isn't a side-handed shot at my comment. The main thing that I don't like about the DS-1 is the fact that the pick attack is lost. Good sound, but the feel of the amp is lost to the pedal because the tone stack is grounding out your pick attack frequencies. I like the other pedal otherwise. I don't fall for the "boutique or die have to spend every red cent or it sucks" mindset. Good sounds or go home.

If you want a great sounding Boss pedal to slam your amps front end then get the OD-3.
It's very thick and quite natural/warm sounding. No annoying high end fizz, thin midrange or lost low end.
Much better than the DS-1 and SD-1.

i don't really care for it, it sounds to line 6ish to me. im glad is is working for you though!

I have one that is modded. It sits on the shelf and has been plugged in for a total of about 3 minuets.

I've found what others have posted on here to be true as well. Sucks as a "distortion" into a clean amp/channel - works excellent as a boost! Now I understand why players like Satriani and Vai had, at one time (and may still?), used them in their rigs. Want 80's hair metal heaven with harmonics galore? Boost a Marshall or slightly dirty amp of choice with a DS-1! This works beautifully, IME.

Also, the Keeley mod IS very bassy (but not a bad thing, IMHO). But I used the Keeley as a boost also, and the tone itself didn't seem too different from a stock DS-1 (the newer ones) other than the boosted bass.

All IME, and as always, YMMV.

the boost circuit in there is still a really good boost. forget the drive. its a great pedal cause they are dirt cheap and if a simple boost is what you need for the front of a crunchy amp, you cant beat it. A lot of boost follow this circuit pretty closely. not the drive part but the level.

I recently bought a MIT BOSS sd-1 since i destroyed my original MIJ to a Keeley mod and its music to my ears and the tone is more focused in a live situation. Im selling all my boutique OD's...except the Cusak Screamer v.2. which is a hybrid of ts-9/sd-1 in one pedal. DOD 250 grey pedal, SD-1 and TS-9/808 are still the winners for me through a stock JMP Marshall. BOSS blues driver is underrated as well..great boost pedal. my two cents
