pete thorn must be the luckiest guy on the planet (maybe he should buy a lottery ticket). Because tone isn't in the hands yet he always sounds great....how does he always find the best sounding gear while others seem to find the duds

Funny how that works, isn't it?

Not really funny - it's a talent. Most amps can be dialed in to sound at least decent. So why do some guitarists always have terrible tone? Ears. What sounds good to them, and hence why they dial their gear in to sound that way, is because they think it sounds good.

Sometimes it's just laziness. Other times it's just a low priority. On recordings, it could be a bad sound engineer, etc. But live, bad tone is a combination of the guitar player's bad ears and the live sound team not being willing or able to correct it.
