Not really funny - it's a talent. Most amps can be dialed in to sound at least decent. So why do some guitarists always have terrible tone? Ears. Sometimes it's just laziness. Other times it's just a low priority. On recordings, it could be a bad sound engineer, etc. But live, bad tone is a combination of the guitar player's bad ears and the live sound team not being willing or able to correct it.
