isocab or 1x12 in a box... thoughts?

I've been using a Randall Isolation (iso-cab) for a couple years. It gets the job done, but it by no means sounds great. I'm waiting to check out a Rivera Silent Sister (once they come in), but I wonder if it's a better idea to pickup a nice 1x12 (CAA, Bogner, Diezel) and have a box built around it or case build to keep the noise down.

Thoughts?

A decent amount. Especially low end. However, mine is in a closet across from my control room and with the closet door closed, you can watch low volume TV without hearing it. Of course, this is with a 120W non-master plexi style amp cranked to all hell - like outdoor festival loud. A good volume to get a nice tone with a master volume amp that would be way too loud outside of the box would be barely audible.

Sure. I have a ton of them. Unfortunately, musicv2.com died and I have not put together another place to host my clips yet. We can revisit this when I get a new hosting spot put together, but for the record, I posted half a dozen clips on several boards as an experiment and not one person could tell the ones that were recorded in the box vs. the ones that were recorded outside of it... Same guitar, same amp, same cab... There is absolutely no difference in the quality of the tone when close-micing with a '57...

Now.... of course I'm not expecting you to buy that strictly by taking my word for it since you haven't heard the clips, however, it is true no one could tell me which were which...

I like the idea of building a box for a 1x12 cab. You can do it yourself and do exactly what you want with it in terms of mic placement, finish, padding, cable access, etc. It's a sealed box after all. The iso cab is built on the same principle but self-contained. In fact, you can build that yourself too. Think of it as a speaker cab with a deep door that seals shut on it's face.
 
how did you get that cab in there without breaking your back and scraping your knuckles?

The cab is held together with velcro at the corners. There are metal guides for the pieces, so it is very solid once the velcro is tightly affixed, but you can easily take off a side to roll in your cab... Pretty clever actually...
