I've been playing my Fortin Cali mod next to an XTC 101B.

I've had the Fortin for a while now and it's gotten me off swapping. But i have been going through amps for a few months because i wanted something with a great clean and nice crunchy mid gain tones. After a Lonestar and an Electra Dyne I've got a XTC, suprise suprise. It's a 101b from 07 and i just installed the Marvel mod which took all of 5 minutes, SIMPLE stuff.

I think I've had enough time with the amps to make an honest comparison. If i were playing a gig tonight i would be bringing the XTC. It's versatile, sounds good, great footswitch and a very good effects loop. The clean is nice, the blue channel is very nice and i like it a lot with a pedal boosting it. You could probably buy an XTC and never use the red channel if you have some pedals for high gain on the blue channel.

The red channel is another story and I'm still playing around with it. Compared to the Fortin....no comparison. The Fortin Cali mod is tighter, more gain, better overall feel, cleans up better, better feeling bottom end. And I'm using the Cameron mode on the XTC and it's just not as fun to play as the Fortin.

Now the red channel isn't a total dog and with some more tweaking I'm sure i can get something better from it. I'm suprised by how much gain it doesn't have without the boost engaged. Even with the boost engaged it's nowhere near as saturated as the Fortin and it's still loose sounding as compared to it. But i have been using a BB preamp to tighten things up, but i think a different pedal would work better with this amp, probably something with less compression and more sparkle.

But, they're both great amps and i do enjoy playing around with all the tones each one offers. It's hard to beat the versatility of the XTC.

I think if Mike Fortin reworked that red channel and got it close to the Fortin, then that might just be the amp to end all amps.

Sounds cool! At this point, I just want my Cali Mod soon!!!! Hopefully before the end of this month is what Mike is telling me.

Brentsp has some mod for the xtc that I thought sounded killer, not sure which channel though.

What made you get an xtc anyways?

IIRC he did mod the guy from The Salad's XTC's red channel. It sounded great on video.

Well i got the Fortin placed on my minds list of things that won't get sold. Saved up a little and have been doing the amp swap with the 2nd amp. And it was sitting in GC and it's in MINT shape. I do like the XTC better than other modern high gain switchers like the Diezels and Engl's of the world.

I need to try it on some Greenbacks. When i have some extra coin I'm going to try some Scumbacks. I think i could see myself keeping the XTC though, the clean and Blue channels are really nice. Just wish the red channel was a bit tighter.

They are great amps. I just traded for one that should be here by the end of the week or early next week. I decided to give the Marvel mod a shot as well as it looks really easy to install and I need an excuse to pick up a decent soldering iron anyway.

I loved the blue channel with the boost on my old one. I'm excited to try the Cameron mod on the red channel though.

Who the hell flips an xtc in gc?? Can't see getting fair market value but score for you.

I want to try the Twinjet some time.

Whoever it was must have taken it hard in the rear. Who flips ANYTHING at GC? Ivan picked up a nice Suhr for $1900 last year, i imagine GC probably bought that for $1000 tops

The post 2004 setting has the most gain though. The Cameron and pre 2004 modes have less gain but also a lot less noise which is nice. They're supposed to have less compression and sound more open which i guess they do. I hear a difference but not a huge one, although i need more time with each mode.

From your description I think you might like the slightly more agressive touch on the Red channel of the 100b, might be the perfect amp for you.

I will get the Cali mod from Dan, it will be my red ch and my Wizard is the blue, clean nah don't play clean. That might be the amp to end all amps for me, I hope.

Cool comparison.

I've always liked the XTC's.

I can honestly say that the Fortin I played had more compression and saturation than pretty much any amp I've ever tried.

No joke when people say the notes jump off the board.

If you set it up that way, it can also be very open and raw with little compression by using the toggle switches.

Please stop talking about the amp. I can't freaking stand the wait right now. I am dying for my amp to come back!!

I put the EVH speakers in my Bogner 4x12 in place of the V30's, works great with the XTC. I'd like to try Scumbacks but don't see it happening anytime soon.
XTC is a great amp I wish you could make the green channel a plexi channel.

I'm right there with you danyeo. Of all the amps that have come & gone, the xtc still remains. And even for it's shortcomings, the versatility of the amp just can't be beat. I'm running KT88's in mine and can't see ever going back.

I highly recommend greenbacks or Scumback M75's with it.

Dan I got to say and I'm honestly not trying to stir up any dust but... wouldn't Marks CCV or Friedman's Marsha be up your ally? They're both amps with a clean channel and a sweet high gain channel? Also Doesn't Mike Fortin make an amp with a high gain and a clean? I'm just throwing these out as possibilities.

By the way I didn't know you nhad a Mesa ED. Definitly dig that amp!!

Absolutely.

Didn't mean to imply anything else

I returned the ED. NOT a basement amp, you have to crank that thing and it's mastervolume jumps faster than a Mark series amp. I really have ZERO gas for a Cameron amp since i own a Fortin Cali Mod and i wouldn't take a chance on a CCV with my money since i don't trust Mark at all. I don't have much interest in the Friedman amps because I'm just not too familiar with them. And the XTC is one of the few amps that really holds it's value on the used market, plus it's a great amp with a few tweaks here and there.

Yeah if there are two amps I've noticed hold their value extremely well it's the XTC and SLO.
