No offense, but I think a lot of you guys don't really get Clapton. Ask BB King who's the best white blues player. Its not SRV (who's great, don't get me wrong), its Clapton. Lots of you guys use 80s metal players as your reference point and that's just apples and oranges, and one type of vibrato isn't better than another, its all about context. I love Page, but as EVH said, he often sounded like his fingers were broken live.
None taken but Since when is BB King considered the first and last word on Blues Players Colin? I respect the man of course but theres guys I like better than Clapton; Albert King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy just to name a few... I have immense respect for Clapton, I think that its foolish not to, I just prefer others to him...

I'd rather hear Joe Bonamassa rip some blues right now instead of Clapton. Joe B is just on fire everytime he plays. He's young and he's just got it. He blew me away when we saw him live. And IMHO, it's tough to make blues sound exciting and fresh again like how Joe does.

But when guys like BB King and even EVH consider him the man, and people all over message boards say he sucks and is overrated I find it silly.

I agree with you, to say the man suck is silly but we've heard it for ages; Hendrix was overrated, EVH is overrated, The beatles suck, clapton sucks blah blah blah... I dont think any of these guys suck and I have nothing but respect for them, each and every one will be listened to as long as there are living souls on this planet, centuries after we are all dust. That said, I have my preferences and Clapton isnt high on them, which is kind of funny because I have every cream, Derek and the Dominos, Blind faith album as well as a bunch of others by him and do enjoy alot of what hes done. However, there are other people I like better and find more inspiring, what can I say after that?

As far as the "don't get it" thing. There's lots of good music out there (and art, food, cultures, it goes on) that I bet many on here don't like. That doesn't mean its not good, it means you like what you like and don't what you don't,right? Fine, except that if you "got" what others like about it you might open up your tastes a bit and see what all the fuss is about. For the longest time I couldn't get past the whole "cookie monster" thing, but guess what after giving it a fair shake, I dig it. Its probably never going to be my favorite, but I can respect it. There's great music in every genre and limiting yourself just isn't a good thing. Carry on ;)

in before the "guthrie govan does it all better than the rest" :D ;)

one thing I'll say, is that as far as improv skills go. I really don't care how great Cream was at improvising. When I see a solo that I love played live, I like it to be played like it was on the record. If its a well written, well played solo that I really enjoy, I'd prefer it to be given as much respect live as the riffs are. if that makes sense

Thats funny cause Joe has ripped off EC pretty hard...EJ too, but then again, EJ ripped off EC hard as well.
I hear them guys trying to play their Cream licks and its never as cool as EC did it 40 years ago.

Bonomassa also got his break as a kid from BB King :D

And was quick to cite Clapton and EJ as obvious influences at his recent clinic at MI.

He has already apologized for what he said today. HE said he was jealous because Cream and Hendrix started it, then Page and co, step in and ran with it. :aww:

I`ve always thought Eric was a great singer and songwriter. The guitar was kinda more like a pen than a sword for him in my ears... If that makes any sense. I don`t like Jimmy`s live solos, but STH`s solo and his writing in general, is immortal to me :)

I think it's all about personal taste. For me Clapton never has done it for me. I've never heard one thing he has done that has put me on my ass where I've said "WOW". But that's just me. I'm not saying he sucks because he doesn't he is an amazing player and song writer but to my ears when I hear him I just can't see his greatness so many speak about. I can see in the 60's at the time Cream came out it being a big deal, because it was a fresh sound but for my taste it is just not spicy enough.

The real funny thing would be to hear Clapton try and play Cliffs Of Dover.

clapton was one of my early heroes. i learned many a cream solo when i first started playing. and i will have to agree his vibrato is amazing, although i dont listen to much EC these days..

interesting thread with an assortment of opinions..all good. I know the thread directly mentions ZEP and Cream...but personally I thought "Guitar playing-wise" Ritchie Blackmore and Jeff Beck were more appealing to my ears and dominant. I have live bootleg cuts of Ritchie in 69-70 that would make Clapton and Page's head spin...but i love all those guys to the bone. Carl posted some pretty convincing Clapton cuts, that for that period, u have to admit was great. Eric Johnson is wonderful and in a class all by himself. As far as the newer Blues-oriented players..Eric Gales is my fav! Joe B is a bad mother as well, exciting to watch.

Uli is the man!

I can say that there's a ton more Zep songs that move me more than most Clapton tunes, no matter what era Clapton. To me, Page was king in the studio - with everything from production to songwriting to layering tons of stuff, etc. For less hard rock, I'd give my vote to Floyd for that stuff. Yep, Page was sloppy and played like crap alot live. Love Sabbath

As far as purely listening to solo's, I'd take Hendrix or SRV over everyone. Stevie is one of the few guys out there I'd rather listen to a live album over studio stuff any day of the week. He just had something that gripped me.
