On Friday, my wife and I were Jake E Lee's guest at his show in Long Island, N.Y. I had the chance to ask him about the EVH 5150III and gear. Right now he says he loving the Red Channel, but goes back to the Blue every now and then. He started the tour off using the Blue. But now its red all the way. He doesn't like having the gain all the way up as well.

Overall, I think he sounded good. I think he's still struggling somewhat to play the older material. Not bashing him in anyway. He is one of my influences growing up. He has more talent in his pinky than I ever will. I'm simply just giving an opinion. It was an honor to meet him. I've met just about everyone in the business over the last 30 years, and I can say Jake was honestly nice and genuine.

I have enclosed some pictures from the other night and backstage. I have also enclosed a link to 3 of my videos. I should be seeing him again at the end of the month. He was in great spirits, and was very chatty. He had 5 White Charvels with the Mahogany necks with ebony fret board. During some songs, he would tune a string here and there. He seemed comfortable on stage and moved around a lot.

I will try and remember more from the other night. Hope you all enjoy the photos and videos.

Thanks

Patrick

Very cool! I agree that his chops are definitely not where they used to be. Glad he's playing again, though.

Very cool, I'm jealous that you got to hang with him and BS about guitars and amps. I regret not going to the LI show. Not sure what made me decide to skip it. Jake's my favorite guitarist so I was beyond excited to hear he was coming back. Sure he was a bit rusty at first but I've been watching every video I can find since his return and as expected he's getting his groove back and getting better and better. I've been on a bender of watching and listening to tons of live bootlegs from his Ozzy days and he was on fire back then and that's what put him at the top of my list as my all time favorite guitarist. Granted he's not as clean as he was back then but he's still got it that's for sure and it seems to be coming back show after show. Even the awesome stage presence he had back in the day seems to be coming back more and more as he gets more comfortable on stage again.

Cool to hear he's been using the red channel more, I noticed that in one of the videos. I live on the red channel of my 50w 5150III since that's the tone in my head (yes I hear too much gain in my head haha). First amp I've owned or played that I didn't need an OD pedal in front to tighten up, saturate, boost a bit and compress a bit, it just gets it right.

Didn't realize he had 5 twin Charvels out with him, thought it was 3 by watching the different straps on them. I hope Charvel whips up some blue and purple burst replicas for him, would be cool to see him play them again.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I was surprised to see that many Charvels.. Did you get a chance to watch my Jake Videos? If you didn't check them out! He is getting better with each show. You should go to the NJ show at the end of the month.

I use the red channel as well, so it was great to see & hear the amp in action .

I'm a huge Jake fan, and he was a big influence on my playing in my early years.
I caught the 4/5 show in CT - Jake and the band were on fire. He did not miss a note all night - looked happy and loose & comfortable on stage. He was moving quite a bit as well.

It was a great show. Nice to see him playing live again, as I had not seen him since the Badlands tour. Much better than I had expected after seeing earlier videos, but it seemed like they gained momentum after each show. Figured you never know how much he'll play out, so I forced myself to get out to the show. Glad - wasn't disappointed.

Didn't get to talk to him much - security was "one thing signed, one pic - keep moving". But Jake seemed genuinely to enjoy the fans and be a little (humbly) shcokded at how well he is still recieved.
I hope he continues to do well and releases more material.

He's definitely lost a step but is still running at at least 75% so I'll take it! When you consider some of the crazy stretches he does across the fretboard, I think any of us would struggle... I still have a hard time with that stretch on the bark at the moon outro solo.

So true !

I caught the Mexicali show last Sunday night my g.f. bought me meet and greets.

They sounded 10 X better than any of the youtube clips the band is getting tighter, Jake appears to be one of those guys that just don't like playing without a band, comparing the metal show performances. I can relate to that it is always boring playing alone.
Jakes playing was 100% IMO I wont dissect the couple mess ups with the band and just take it in as a live rock show.

They play the Red Dragon stuff live just as good as the recordings.
For me they could ditch Bark at the moon and exchange it for Killer of Giants, Thank god for the bomb or any Badlands tune.

During the meet and greet I talked to Ronnie the bass player the most because of the bottleneck during the meet and greet, Eccentric and very Humble guy seemed like a very cool dude.
My g.f. said Ronnie was like a real life Captain Jack Sparrow. good compliment to you dude if you are out there reading this

So glad Jake is back. I really like the new album. The singer got a bad rap from those first few shows but does sound good on the studio stuff. Hopefully will come to the Southwest and do some shows.

I'm also glad Jake is back. Let's not put too much pressure on him! He did so awesome keeping Ozzy viable. And everyone agrees Badlands was cool. Was so cool he did all that stuff without a whammy!

There was a thread on H-C about why Jake isn't "bigger". I replied that he never pimped himself like Zakk, Dime, even Satch, Gilbert, or Robben Ford.

hopefully has a relaxing re-introduction into the biz, and has long term plan/support!

I'm the same way without a band or at least a drummer, add a band and my timing and groove just go on auto pilot and lock in and I can focus on other things.

I'd love to hear him play Killer of Giants or Thank God for the Bomb again those are two of my favorite Jake tracks. I think Killer of Giants may actually be my favorite solo of his, just enough flash with the tapped stuff but still so musical and memorable not just a random flurry of notes.

just saw him myself this month in Largo FL. in a place no bigger than an average AMC theater.

you're right, he did struggle a little bit with his older stuff but I'm with you, he's done more for music than I could dream of. He's a huge influence on me and I was just glad to be able to see him in case the opportunity never comes up again.

The band kicked serious ass too, the drummer hopped out front to sing bark at the moon, and the singer played the drums. Both were exceptional.

Largo Cultural Center? LOL..nice! I kicked my own ass for missing that! Hard to do but I did it. I also kicked my own ass for missing Wishbone Ash at Ringside Cafe.

We should hook up.

Looks like he's having a good time... I guess at the end of the day, that is all that really matters.

that's the number one thing I took away from the show. Jake was just simply enjoying himself.

in one song he broke 4 string and had to finish on the low E, and was laughing and having a ball doing it. I enjoyed myself immensely just because he was.

Bro, my band plays around here all the time (Sons of Nuns), come out and I'll gladly buy you a beer!

Just got the email from Largo Cultural that Winery Dogs are coming May 15 and they're doing some kind of pre-show party. Going to see if I have the funds by this weekend for tix.
And then there's Zebra in September too... some great shows at that tiny little venue!

You guys are both down in the Tampa area? Cool.
Can't believe Jake was close and I didn't even know it.

I recently moved down here and haven't caught Son of Nuns yet.
Where/when is your next gig?
