Jake E. Lee playing on TMS

Was he up to his caliber from 25 years ago? No. Did he suck? No. Probably nervous and a little under-worked.... You guys gotta remember, he's been onstage only a handful of times in the last 20 years... He said he put it away for a few years at one point but I'm sure he didn't really work it totally back into shape until more recently... It just sounds like he needs a few months yet of good 'shedding to blast the rest of the rust off....

2 best guitar guys on the show so far - John 5 and Steve Stevens.... Doug Aldrich tied with Stevens.... My favorite was Sheehan but we'll keep it to 6-string slingers for the sake of discussion here....

Jake had some slop but he was nowhere NEAR as bad as Warren DiMartini a few seasons back.... THAT was just embarrassing to watch....

I couldn't hardly understand a thing he was playing. It was similar to what I'd expect from Kurt Cobain.

we can't get TMS in Canada. Only get to see it when someone uploaded to Youtube.
Any clips of Jake that you guys know of?

I watched it last night. Wow. Heavy handed to the point of knocking the guitar out of tune, used the red channel with way too much gain, horribly thin and buzzy tone, and there was no real direction at all.

Hopefully he can pull it together. That was almost as uncomfortable to watch as he seemed to be doing it.

It was a bit rough but I was happy to see him play. He looked genuinely happy as well which is always nice. I can't contest the whole amp being overly saturated thing. Damn was there no articulating whatsoever.

Not sure.....I watch the show all the time.....and his tone/playing was some of the worst in the past few years.
Do I think any less of Jake? Hell no!!
Love the guy.....
sure he was little nervous stage scared maybe? :dunno:
I am sure in the room it was killer.....and Jake giving that guitar away??? SO CLASSIC COOL!!! :rawk:
That was one of the best shows I have seen....... even though I didnt dig his playing/tone. ;)

Dude that guitar was staged.

Yeah, that moment was pulled off as awkwardly as Jake's playing

Glad to see him up there playing, but his tone was so bad I couldn't tell what he was playing. :(

Hopefully it will be better next episode.

Yes, I thought Frank Hannon had a great sound and played well. I also enjoyed Michael Schenker, Doug Aldrich, John 5, and Steve Stevens. Paul Gilbert was just ok.

I disppointed with Jake E Lee, I am huge fan of Badlands and hoped for much more. Lynch was also very disappointing.

I Was thinking the exact same thing about Jake E's playing before this thread popped up. I thought what he was playing was bad and his tone coming out of the 5153 was muddy as all hell. Hopefully this weeks episode he does a 180 and melts my face off...but damn was i disapointed.

OMG that was pitifully bad. I was noddling through my 50 watt 5150 III when he was on (yeah I have that little of a life! :aww: ) and I was aghast at the tone and playing.

Who they goan have next up there... Stephen Hawking?

He is just knocking the rust off. He is gonna watch that show back and get it moving forward. Much love for Jake. It is a motherfucker getting clean and sorting out life. He will get it back.

Getting clean? Never knew there was a problem?

This is earlier this year and he seems to be playing well so maybe it's just nerves

What ever happened to big, ballsy searing rock tone?

A bunch of you guys have it, I have it. Why not guys like Lynch and Lee?

Dimartini's tone was great on the last album....

He made a joke about this rumor of him smoking crack in an alley in Vegas being a lie... There are no alleys in Vegas. Then said drinking was a demon. I give him the benefit of the doubt on it. He is working on things, whatever they are, and I'm glad he is. Cool cat and legend of metal. Nothing but best wishes for him.

This may not make too much sense but I'm just trying to wrap my head around why some of my favorite players don't sound good in this situation (not just tone).

Do you think that some of these guys are out of their element because they feel like they have to "fill" the room so they begin using technique that isn't their bread and butter (i.e. constantly hitting multiple strings during melodic lines, such as double stops) and consequently things come out as mush? Do they feel shredding on a metal program is old hat and they want to show diversity in their playing? I mean, all they have to do is go out and play a few seconds of a cool heavy riff that they have done millions of times and these forums would be filled with praise.

I think for him it is probably a case of not playing or really having passion for music anymore.
