This may not make too much sense but I'm just trying to wrap my head around why some of my favorite players don't sound good in this situation (not just tone).

I have thought about that.

It sounds like the amps are barely cracked on for one thing. If they could crank an amp into an ISO box (much like most touring pro's are doing these days) and use that as the feed for the show, the tone should improve.

I also think that many of the amps are rented and not familiar to some of these guys. Sure, they are pro's and know how to get around an amp but maybe they get one with bad tubes, etc., and now just deal with it.

I blame the show for a good piece of it. It's a metal show and no one knows how to get a decent guitar tone to come across on TV? This would be a great Stump The Trunk question. I am going to send an email now.

I watched it last night and haven't read this thread until now. At times, I was almost laughing and thinking some of those segments sounded like they handed a gained out guitar to a member of the audience who didn't even play guitar and he just fooled around and made noise and stood there looking cool.

But like others have said, very few great players have really been able to shine in that situation so who knows what happens to you when you get up there. I sure don't. It seems like the Bermuda Triangle for guitar players.

I have seen a few of those shows and was also not as excited/impressed as I thought I might/should be. I think it might come to nerves, playing on TV, without a band, or your gear. I think the reason John 5 was the exception because as a session guy he is used to just walking in and nailing it in all kinds of situations and styles.
But I can't wait to hear Jake's new album!!

Absolutely, but honestly, Ritchie Kotzen, the guest last week, who we all know is an amazing guitarist right now/still, was just as lost... sounded just as ridiculous...

It sounds like TMS is a talent and skills black hole. You show up with talent and skills and it disappears for the time you're in the building.

Is the latest Jake performance online yet?

Dunno, but as many have mentioned, John 5 was phenomenal on TMS. He sounded great, played a variety of interesting things and was basically very prepared with cool stuff...

John 5 is a freak. I believe he lives in and thrives on black holes.

Strong point, sir.

I don't know, call me crazy, but if I was going on TV I would probably make sure I was at least prepared with several things to play knowing I have 15-30 seconds a go. Unfortunately I think these guys, even when they aren't cutting it any more, are still getting so much smoke and worship blown up they're ass they don't realize they need to get back to the Shed.

Beyond Paul Gilbert & John 5, all the other guitarists were buried behind their effects when playing on TMS. Sure a lot of those guitarist aren't GIT or Shrapnel type shredders and need their effects to sound somewhat okay, but yeesh.

Even Tony MacAlpine, who is a DEMON, was buried behind the effects on his Coreblade.

I can never see the performances outside of their very akward and lame interviews because I am in Canada.. two questions, what is the format for their live performance? Do they jam between commercials? why don't they just all go direct with an axe fx or kemper? I find it hard to believe that a monster like kotzen would struggle. Are they not allowed to jam away on their own stuff with a house band or something? Besides that, whoever is producing that show needs to shake things up. The hosts are so akward and nerdy at times and there just seems to be a lot of dead space.

You'd be really surprised to see how most of these pro players choke the way they do. Warren DiMartini was so nervous that he could hardly speak let alone play.

Just watched it. The 1st out sounded great! Jake must have turned the MV up after the 1st out, because there was definitely some frequency cancelation happening there. To my ear the amp was just too loud, and was clipping the mic/board input. A phasing issue between the source and boom mics maybe? Something was definitely wrong, but it wasn't Jake's playing.

No big-deal... Jake is legend!

That amazes me because he is usually right on the ball (unless he drank or something) I do remember seeingsome clips with him in whitesnake and thought that his style didn't really fit but that is a whole other thing.

You obviously didn't see the Schenker episode? No effects, just a bit of verb maybe. Sounded great. So did the guy from Tesla.

I agree..but then how would most of us feel being told "you can't play anything that is on a CD etc because of royalties" so you need to come up with something cool and new?? imagine being in a music shop trying some gear and having a shop full of people watching you (which is bad enough) then them telling you you can't play any of your own songs............makes it kinda tough.

but hey can jake be classed as a pro player any more????? ...hopefully from now on we can call him that

Demartini did slip it part of a solo from the "ratt" album in his appearance ( I love that self titled album from when 99??) so I picked up on it straight away..obviously eddie didn't

Warren is going deaf I think.. I talked to him last year at NAMM...his hearing is real bad..

John 5 is a amazing player.. Frank Hannon is a seasoned legend and never takes breaks from playing..very underated. I think some of the older players get caught up in life (family and such), and practice less. Thats gotta be a hard balance. I think Jake was nervous, and baffled with what to noodle with. He's still Jake..it'll come back. He just needs to shake off some rust from that long break. Richie use a pick! It's "That Metal Show"!! That dude could light it up...if he "wanted" to.

I still say that it sounds like the amps are barely cracked open for most of those guys. Kotzen kept looking at the amp almost like he couldn't believe how bad it sounded while he was playing. Super thin and buzzy just like Jake's tone. Whoever is responsible for capturing the tones should be fired.

Guess I am out of touch. Can someone explain what TMS is and if there is a link to a video please post it. Jake E. Lee is a great guitar player, I would like to see what all the fuss is about.
