How about just not sucking?

Hey wait a sec. Suck what??? :gethim:

Seriously though. Didn't someone here say the tone was awesome in the room?
Was it 2 separate weeks or were the shows (season?) recorded back to back on the same day and shown week(s) apart?

As for the playing? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on a few sec on some tv show outro's. Wasn't there. Maybe there were under lying circumstances or what ever. Maybe he still has some problems??? Dunno. After all the Badlands/ Ozzy/ Solo stuff, I hope this was just a fluke. Other pro players have had the same prob on that show.

I see it all the time at work. Some one will screw something up and all these other mech will be criticizing up a storm. Then later they get put into the same circumstance/ situation that caused the first screw up and guess what they do the same thing or worse. I've learned that lesson the hard way 1st hand.

If every thing else he puts out is terrible I will be really bummed. Really dug his playing.

What is this, brain surgery? It's playing the guitar.

Either your chops are up to snuff or they arent. Mine go through ups and downs. I'm on vacation now and haven't played in quite a while. If I had to go on TV next week, I'd hit it hard and be ready. That's all.

We all know Jake is a guitar hero, and we all love the guy. That's why we're dissapointed. I'm sure the album will kick ass and he'll kill it when he get's on tour.

How did 'most people' become 'we' ? Most people is most people period, not all people who post on an internet forum called rig-talk. It wasn't a pointed statement.

Yeah I'm with you, I was disappointed too, gutted in fact, guess that's why I'm wanting to give benefit of the doubt and feel bad for the guy.
Well... you did address people in this thread who said they could have done better, so some may be taking that personally. I found your response about phallic full stacks in the bedroom funny, but it could certainly be inferred that you were saying that those stating they could have done better ARE people who were pretending to be guitar heroes in their bedrooms with said phallic stacks... Although I said I believed I could do better, I took no such offense to your amusing comment.

That said, my comments still stand. I've played live plenty in the past although it has been many years. I don't claim to be 1/1000th of the guitarist that Jake E. Lee was in his Ozzy hey day or currently either. All I'm saying is that I believe I could have done better coming up with 4 or 5 ten second snippets of guitar playing and executing them in that environment than what he did. Based on what I heard, I couldn't have done much worse... Of course, we'll never get to prove this out because I don't think TMS will be calling me anytime soon to play on the show. One might think this makes all this easier for me to say, (and it probably does :D ) but there isn't much I can do about that... I also stand by my comment that any number of other rig-talk guys I've actually seen/heard play could have done better... Hell, Curt (Chubtone here) played probably 12 hours over two days in my room at the LA Amp Show and he was amazing throughout. I'm 100% sure he could have easily mustered 50 seconds of guitar playing on camera at TMS that would have been more entertaining than JEL...

As far as whether anything anyone would have played would have sounded good on the TV show, I believe there is less control over that, but as I said, I hear tons of high gain amps compressed on YouTube recorded through distorting camcorder mics that sound 100 times better.

If JEL was nervous or out of practice or whatever, why not just skip the gig? If he was required to be there to promote the upcoming record, he should have prepared better. It's obvious to me he didn't prepare at all.

Another comment you made kinda raises a bigger question. You mentioned not making disrespectful statements about a pro player. Are we supposed to not have opinions on things we see and hear to preserve the fragile egos of the Jake E Lees of the world, or are we here to discuss gear and playing and music based on our subjective opinions? I say the latter. When I post a clip of my playing or amps here, I know that I could possibly get a lot of negative feedback, but I choose to let the chips fall where they may. I don't get offended if people think it sucks. Neither should Jake (and I really, really doubt he gives a crap what any of us think or say even if he reads it).

Some people think my amps look stupid/lame and they would never play them because of the cherry cutouts in the grills. Whatta ya gonna do? - can't please everyone and I certainly am not going to cry about them saying they think it looks shitty...

Just some thoughts...

Steve

Good response Steve. I agree with you actually. Hey you can't worry what every single person thinks. You like your design and people who buy them do and thats what matters. I hadn't heard of you until today, but curiosity got me looking on your website. I actually think your amps look cool, for a change in the genre you are in not like a hacked up Marshall, but a functionally designed unit. A model will sell itself on it's own merits. If someone won't buy one based on the fact it has a cherry on the front, then you have probably saved yourself from a support nightmare. Try having a female name for a Company name. It's a fantastic dickhead filter, not to say a few don't get through here and there.

As for negative comments, no matter what you make or do, you will get them, however, when you analyze it, most of these comments come from assumptions from people who have never even been in a room with the product, let alone played it. It's the internet, the door opens to the street.

I see I'm getting some sarcastic comments thrown at me in some of the above posts from people. I'm British. We invented it. Sarcasm 101: It's plain boring without irony.

Respectfully, Alan.

I refuse to comment on Jake's playing because I only play in my basement for my enjoyment. I shouldn't have an opinion.

On a side note, What pisses me right off is that I can't speak straight up on these sort of sites without someone coming back and bringing up my business and attempting to use it against me like some sort of gag device. If you don't like me and what I have to say and you think that somehow electronically morphs in to my work and customer service, then fine, no-ones forcing you to buy anything from me. It's the last thing on my mind when I'm posting as a GUITAR PLAYER !!!! I have opinions, such is life.

Not sure if you're referring to me, but I'll respond anyway.

Nobody said you "can't" do anything. My comment was simply that most MI business owners don't make comments like that because it could be taken negatively by a large portion of their user base.

If you want to post as a guitar player only you may want to consider NOT posting as "Carol-AnneAmps." How else are you to be perceived except as a business if your forum name is the name of your business?

Say what you mean and mean what you say. That's a good thing and not nearly enough these days do it. Just don't get "pissed off" if it's in some way associated with your business when you're posting AS your business name.

I only get pissed off if my business is used against me when what I post has NOTHING at all to do with my business, amps, etc etc....... There's no 'e' in Ann btw ;)

The problem with most MI business owners is they are either too afraid to post or if they did, they would end up blowing a gasket. I've seen some really well respected builders go on forums and get banned in minutes. It;s difficult at first not to take things personally because you put your entire self in to something and some dumb ass decides to pick a fight just because. However, I'm way past that. You can call me c*** and I won't react, but shake that finger and tell me I'm risking my business because I post and that is about the only thing that will get a reaction. No offense meant or taken, it just really irks me. You wouldn't have made that comment if I didn't do what I do for a living. right ?

Oh dear after those last two posts you need a sarcasm lesson:

Maybe you need to read more. <---that's sarcasm with irony.....

My penis is so small it doesn't hurt the sound guy <-------so was that.......with a touch of English self-sarcasm which gives the reader the idea you are a good sport not a jerk laughing at his own lame jokes.

All right I'm out of here. Enough debauchery for one day. It's been a pleasure guys. No harm meant or done.

I'm as gutted as you guys are after listening to him play on TMS. When he was introduced at the beginning, I turned to my wife and said. watch this hun, this guy is monster player. She looked at me like I had two heads whne he started playing. I forwarded through each segment of his playing , it was just too awkward to watch. and was left with a rather surreal feeling

haven't read all of the posts from the last 2 pages but I did skip through and see the word "pro" used a lot......jake isn't a professional guitar player, hasn't been that for over 20yrs

Exact same experience here. My wife is very cool and enjoys rock metal. Now that the kids are grown up, I keep a half stack for jamming in the family room. Fun stuff.

So we are psyched to see JEL. I expect big things, she knows only the songs from the radio, and thinks he should be great. We notice he has a 5153. I had one for a year and know it is pretty challenging to get a bad tone from that amp. So easy to dial in and forgiving.

Jake starts playing and about 5 seconds in we just look at each other and look at the TV, then back at each other with a WTF look. It was funny the way it went down.

I look forward to more JEL later on. He will dust it off and look back on that performance and shake his head...

Our perspectives are obviously different on this. Like it or not, when you're on a musical instrument based forum, posting as a musical instrument industry manufacturer, much of what you say is going to be taken in the context of you being a representative of that business. You simply cannot separate the two because you're always wearing your badge.

When you say something that has the potential to be offensive to the same people that use or may use your product, whether or not you're wearing the badge, it's entirely possible that it could affect your business. I don't understand how this could not be obvious but again, we see this from different perspectives and neither will change the opinion of the other.

With that said, I'm all for people saying what they mean and meaning what they say.

Sad indeed, only listened to the first one. I don't feel as embarrassed as I did when I saw him play with that Vegas cover band but that was pretty bad. At least he is playing again.

I also found his performance on both segments of TMS down right aweful. He is Jake E. FRIKCIN Lee and should of kicked ass, but did not even come close!!! Despite if you play in your basement or out live even it if is not much, everyone has the right to criticize his playing even if you are not a guitar player provided you know the difference between playing great or sucking ass!!

His tone on Badlands is one of the most definitive Marshall rock tones every produced.

Jake has the T-Shirt for consistently great tone. He's forgotten more than most people know.

Gotta respectfully disagree on that one. I think his tone is one of the weakest boosted plexi tones I've heard. I love his classic rock mindset and the material on Badlands is terrific. Ultimate Sin is one of my favorite Ozzy albums, again because of the playing and songs. The tone? Is pretty mediocre. It's thin and a fizzy. The Badlands tone is very underwhelming, but the playing and songs are not. All IMO of course, being an ex dive bar/club hack and current, basement, shaft stroker

...and I would love to try some of your amps someday

...and Chubtone, I wouldn't have said no to Kelly LeBrock in any of her states :D

But let's say you could seal the deal. Could you handle your action waxing on the same inner walls that Steven Seagal once did and handle what blues infused, Sensei magic waxes off in the process?
