Jake E. Lee playing on TMS

I thought Jake had one good burst of rhythm playing on the second show, it was I think a few breaks in and caught me by surprise at that point. I think it's fair to critique his overall performance for what it was (or wasn't), but I'm still glad to see him among the living and holding a Charvel and giving it a go. It's kind of painful when you remember these guys in their prime and something like this seems way off the mark, but it's not worthy of drama, he's still the Bark at the Moon guy (which is important to some of us, and kind of silly to be rude about if you're not impressed), but still a huge question as to what kind of return to form may be possible.

My main gripe with TMS is just that they talk over the interviewees all the time...let them respond to the questions. I get you have to move them on if it starts to get slow/boring, but too many times they throw a question out to a guest, and then immediately start to answer it for them.

Exactly! Howard Stern does the same thing.

Bad form Mr. Carol-Ann... Bad form!
Perhaps not the PC thing to say in this overly sanitized and pussified world we live in today, but DEAD ON accurate IMO. I say kudos for having the balls to say it like it is.

Agree.

IMHO panties wadded up because it hit too close to home for some.

First of all, I am not a pro player at all. I have no desire to be "pro" because in order to be a "pro" you have to deal with those, what do you call them? Oh yeah...... other musicians, especially drummers and singers....... Blech ;)

Anyway, I think any of us can talk trash on one of our heroes if they are not up to even a mediocre pro level. Should no one discuss what happens in a pro football game or with an athlete's performance because we aren't pros ourselves? If that's the case, about 90% of all conversation that takes place between males will stop immediately.

To the guys defending Jake to the very end, did you see the show? I looked forward to seeing Jake on there, for weeks! He was atrocious. How can I defend that? He has a new band. Has he not touched a guitar since 1991? There has been talk of a Jake comeback for a couple of years now. How can he still be this rusty? Is he putting in 80 hours a week in the coal mines so he doesn't have time to play? Is he too busy with his volunteer work saving the rain forest or the speckled tree frog? I swear, his left hand didn't even look like it was attached to the body of someone who knew how to play guitar. The 2nd show I just pulled for him and bit my lip hoping he would play something even remotely cool. He was close for a short burst.

And as far as the 5150 III, that amp sounds extremely good on the blue channel with all knobs set at 12 o'clock. It's not exactly a difficult amp to dial in a cool tone on. Maybe it won't give someone the greatest tone they could ever imagine in their mind, but Jake took an amp that sounds killer and made it sound like crap.

I listen to amateur guitarists play all day long. If Jake's performance on TMS was transferred onto some teenager or whatever in my store while I was working, no kidding, I wouldn't have even paid attention to it. If it was that 75 year old grandma playing the drums in the drum shop video that has gone viral recently playing guitar like Jake did on TMS I might have looked on in amusement.

For that to be Jake E Freaking Lee playing, are you kidding me?

At least he tried to play Bark at the Moon.....he was just on the wrong stringset.

I would also add that just because a player is a "pro" doesnt mean they are also a good player.

Ah... so that was what that was...

I'm not defending Jake or the performance. Honestly though from what I've read from what you guys are referring to as the "Jake defenders".... they to me seem to be saying maybe he was nervous and maybe the tone was bad because the sound engineer on that show sucks. Honestly I've yet to hear what I'd call great tone on that show yet. Anyway playing on TV is different than being on stage with a band.... let alone bare bones solo like that. Jake has always seemed to me to be a player that is really in his element when he is in a band situation so for me I'll give him it's just a bad where more than likely nerves got the best of him.

My personal opinion is you don't have to be a pro to arm chair quarterback musicians but it's stupid and in poor taste.... as if music is a sport or competition or as if you have had to perform in the same situations. If you have you might have a different perspective and be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Or maybe not.

Yeah he tried on both shows. He was probably busy learning Lay it Down and Unchained and didnt have time to get to that one.

I am just happy to see him back in the mix no matter what.
Call me a Fanboi from the 80's......but Jake was one of the guys that I was listening to when picking up an Axe back in 1984.

He just needed some Lynch phaser to cover all that up and everything would have been fine.

Chub, my brain agrees with you 100%. Mailman, my heart agrees with you 100% (didn't that sound manly :) )

I've got to go back to the basement and fire up my penis stack.

You guys are missing the point. I was a Jake fanboi too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know who else I was a fanboi of in the 80's?

That's right, Kelly LeBrock. And then a few years later, she faded from the public's eye and was just gone for years and years. Then she re-emerged and this is what we saw:

So yes, I WAS a fanboi. And Jake's comeback on TMS I would equate to Jabba the Kelly's comeback.

And this is what Kelly looks like now:

Kelly has made a strong comeback. Jake needs to do the same. :D

I've played many shows with 'touring' bands, and you are absolutely correct. I've been shocked at how bad some of them were and on the other hand there are some really great local players. Same with singers.

Doesn't mean anything. Just sayin. ;)
