I had the pleasure of meeting Hetfield backstage after a concert back in '97. He shook my hand with a big smile, talked with me about his Explorer and hot rods, and spent the next 2 hours (after a full concert) hanging out and laughing with his other fans that were there.
I agree that he does have a level of presence around him that no one else I know has. Above and beyond that, he was a genuinely nice guy that treated his fans with a lot of respect and seemed to really enjoy talking with all of us.
Ever since that day I guess you could call me a fan boi. But meeting a rock star of his fame and him making it possible for me to sit and talk with him like we're just two guitar players sharing some opinions really made me respect and like the guy as a human being too.
