Has anyone tried the JAN Philips 12AX7WA...what are your thoughts?

I assume it would go in preamp socket v1.

It's a descendent of a Sylvania 12ax7, but it doesn't have as much saturation, is a bit brighter and more prone microphonic issues. The soundstage of the tube is tight clear bass, clear mids and a high-mid/treble kick. They sound pretty good in 5150's.

I would only use one in V1 if it's quiet. I would take a JAN GE 12ax7wa over it any day of the week.

Excellent description. One of them I had went micro badly and it was in v4 of my Marshall at the time. It's an alright tube but nothing great.

I dropped one of my precious JAN GE 12ax7wa...eeet is in tiny pieces

meh, i had one. decent enough sounding, but went microphonic way fast!

just not worth messing with for me and high gain amps.

I plan on changing out v1 in my XTC 101b. I've got some microphonics now and I'm looking for a good solution. it sounds like the Jan Philips is NOT the way to go. Would you guys recommend the JAN GE 12ax7wa or do you think there is a better tube for v1 in the Bogner?

I've run the JAN GE 12ax7wa in V1 of the 101B and it sounds pretty good in them. It helps out the clean channel and will definitely give the dirty channels a slight kick in the ass. A Telefunken sounds great in them, but those are extremely hard to come buy these days.

If you can find a JAN GE or Sylvania, you will be doing better than you would buying a JAN Philips. I used to run mine with an RFT in V6, which was the boost stage. It gave it a touch more fatness. I wouldn't run an RFT in V1 though. It's too dark. Also, a NOS Mullard sounds great in V1, but those are getting pretty scarce and they're expensive as well.
