anyone used it? tried it? own it?

the protone pedals arent retail, but are public, so i was wondering if anyone had the chance to play or try one?

been listening to jason again. i always come full circle back to jason and gilbert. both have always been an inspiration for my playing/writing and the way i look at life.

anyways back on topic - was just wondering if anyone had anything to say about this thing. i know rusty cooley demo'ed one for a bit on youtube but what about anyone else? how does it act as a boost pedal?

they say jason designed it tone wise to the marshall he recorded all his earlier stuff with.

anyway just curious

didn't he use a jcm900?

im not 100% sure as to which model. wish i knew more about what he used though. just for knowledge sakes.

I honestly think he could have used the shittiest amp ever and it wouldn't have mattered. He was fucking amazing.

fucking amazing is an understatement :D

another person thats overlooked was the person he gun-hired to play the song he wrote on his newest album "beginning of the end".

dude that guy can play circles around me. such feeling and his arpeggio's are spot on. he's very articulate as well.

IMHO guys like that, paul, jason, etc are in a league all their own.

I always thought he used that old JMP that he sold a few years back on ebay?

Carvin X-100B with a high gain mod was one of them. but this pedal wasnt modeled after that tone. although that tone can be heard on his instructional DVD on youtube.

i did find some information though - the marshall was a 4 input JMP plexi used on the album A Little Ain't Enough. Jason had it modded to sound as close to EVH as possible for that record.

found out he did own a JCM900 - but it was a combo.

both the carvin and the plexi hit ebay a few years back. dunno who modded the amplifiers - and i dont know who owns them now. he also boosted the marshall with an SD-1.

ironically i think thats the same pedal that Gus G boosted his amplifiers with as well.

It was a jcm900 4502, but i'm just guessing.

That was Michael Lee Firkins.

I have one of those 'High-Gain mod' Carvin X-100B's and it doesnt get anywhere near to Jasons tone. The high gain mod was a factory mod, and it honestly sounded like utter shit. With the gain cranked on full, plus a boost, it still wont do the heavy distorted tones that Jason had. You could get a lot closer with a stock JCM800 and a boost pedal, rather than the Carvin head. The Carvin was super loose, extremely round sounding and not that gainy at all.

I think he posed with one in photos for endorsement reasons, and when he did actually use it later on with Cacophony, he used it for its power section when he used the ADA MP-1. Those Carvins will NOT break up, it has the cleanest highest headroom clean channel i have ever heard. So they work great as a power amp as you get the graphic EQ too.

I used to be a Becker freak when i was younger, and i bought that Carvin because i was a fanboy. I was totally unimpressed with it, then my friend brought over his ADA MP-1. We hooked it up through the Carvin's clean channel and voila... Becker's tone from the Cacophony - Go Off album was there instantly!! This is the same combination he used on that Hot Licks instructional video.

He used one of those Laney AOR heads (the higher gain one) a lot, which is the same as what Richie Kotzen used in his Rock Chops video. You can hear exactly what im talkin about when you check out that Kotzen video, as his tone isn't far from Jason's in it. Perpetual Burn album was done with that amp for sure. Jason even thanks Laney amps exclusively inside the album's sleeve.
