Has anyone tried a Seymour Duncan JB pickup in a les Paul bridge position.

The 498T I put back in there sounds a bit thin, but so did the Dimarzio Super Distortion and Rio Grande BBQ I had in there before. To make the sound thicker should I move the pickup closer or further from the strings?

That is what is mine for the last 6 years. The JB ( The pick up - not that guy from the Midwest )has been my main PU for more than 15 year. It's not for everyone. I feel at home with them. Good for low/medium/ high gain. Just remember were you started - move the pick up/ pole pieces. A little well change the tone and how it feels . You can hear what it does. I like the Gibson pick-up and a good friend swears by it.

I think Thump is right the super is thicker. It has been 19 years since I sold mine. I had a custom in my custom along time ago. Also very cool.

I will have a JB available soon as I am taking it out of another guitar, but I figured I should probably adjust my 498T first a bit. I just put it back in after repotting it.

I will try adjusting the pole pieces a bit on the 498T after I mess with the height. Its just weird that none of the bridge pickups I have tried thicken up the sound.

I probably am going to sell my gold covered Texas and BBQ pickups

It so depends on the amp you are using it with, you will never know until you run it through it.

Not sure at this point as I don't know what amp or amps I will be using for my band. Probably a Marshall 2553 and a Vox AC50 or Fender Bassman for cleans. Could be a mesa mark IV. That is why I didn't specify an amp

I adjusted the 498T up very close the the strings (can get a heavy pick inbetween the strings and the pickup) and so far it is sounding fuller and more what I want. I may try the JB just for the heck of it, I was just curious what people's thoughts were for a LP. I currently have a JB in 2 other Fender guitars and like it...

With some pick-ups that close well cause intonation problems (the string pulls towards the pick up a very small amount, that is something I have read -not seen). But moving the poles and height you can fine tune the guitar to your taste.

I have a JB in the bridge of my Les Paul and it sounds killer.

A WCR Goodwood is a very nice thick pickup for a thinner sounding Les Paul. I'm not a fan of the JB.

There's a greater potential for feedback problems at stage volume too.

I thought the intonation problems were mainly from single coils pulling on the strings and not so much from humbuckers.

If the pickup is potted I thought it would help with the feedback. If I removed the cover on the 498T I think the pickup would not be much lower than the BBQ was in your LP custom.

I will continue to tweak it....

Oh yeah, no doubt wax potted pickups help with feedback. The stock "T-Top" pickups in both of our LP Customs are either not waxed at all or the wax has melted or something. They feedback with high gain for sure (the bridge, not the neck.)

Yeah man, just keep messing with it. I've had a screwdriver on stage before to adjust the pickup height, because I had a guitar that was prone to feeding back. I dialed it in right there between songs (nobody noticed.)

It would be easy enough to pot them, but I am a little nervous about doing that to a vintage pickup. Repotting my 498T took about 30-40minutes....

You want thick in a Les Paul bridge position? Anderson H3+

How about a Suhr Aldrich set?? I bet that would sound thick! I have a Les Paul coming this week that I might try the Aldrich set in. I had them in a PRS Hiland and they sounded really good!!

:)

JB-LP is my all time fave... Only reason I have some others is for layering on a demo we're doing... trying to get some dissimilar sounds.

I think it depends on the Les Paul. I've had some that sounded terrible with the JB in the bridge. The custom I have now sounds good with it, but I think there is a little too much top end for me in this guitar. All depends on your preferences I guess.
