The pre-86 2210's had a problem with channel bleed - both channels on at once, give or take. Makes them worth less I think. Mint condition I would say $700-$800 at most.

found another thread. disregard this last inquiry of mine please!

the thing is that there were several changes over the years and only a couple sound good-- the "over under" input jack'd single channel one is a winner

Most people say the earlier 80's with the vertical jacks are the best. However, it was the 2203 (100 watt that changed). The circuitry in the 2204 remained the same over the years. And mine is an 87 and they were still putting drake transformers in then. I've done a side by side comparison with and 82 vertical input and my 87 horizontal input and they sound pretty much identical. I do prefer the el34's, but there's not a dramatic difference with 6550's.

I just like that open in your face sound of them. I use a clean boost and a OD9 to juice mine. I really disagree about being a one trick pony. You can get a lot of different sounds by using diferent Boosts, OD's, guitars ( and the volume knob) and pickups. A very classic sound.

The single channel 800's with the Drake is what you want to check out. No it does not have modern tone or high gain. The sound comes from cranking the poweramp not the preamp. Last of the great Marshall's.

hey Mark,

was going to say a boost into the Cali might have been the ticket =0 it could certainly get into that territory, but otherwise have you tried say a splawn ? either a quickrod or a nitro, could be closer to what you're looking for

or even a JMP-1 into a marshall power amp rack setup, a lot of 80s bands still use that setup (def leppard to name one)

it might be easier to find a newer production amp than the elusive marshall from the magic year while also maybe being more manageable volume wise, those old amps sound awesome but are crazy loud

good luck in any case =)

Seriously, there are a ton of these out there and it shouldn't be hard to find a good one. I've played quite a few and they've all sounded very much alike depending on how fresh the tubes are and so forth. The MV JMP's sound great too. They're for sale quite often. My buddy has a late 70's JMP 50 watt MV and we've done some gigs together. I can dial it in to sound pretty much identical to my JCM. So when we do a benefit or they we open for one another, I just bring my pedal board and we both play through his JMP. It's pretty simple JCM 800 ds-1 or TS= good tone.

It's really the last Marshall that will give the sweet yet vicious "kerang" in the mids and treble. Newer Marshalls cut in a mix just fine and they can roar but they just don't have that sweetness in the upper mids and on the top end that older ones do pre '84.

How would you dial in one of those particular Marshall amps, to get that vicious kerang in the mids? (while running a dirt pedal in front)
