So reading SteveK's thread about having to play through a house supplied JCM 900 backline compelled me to plug into mine today. :lol: :LOL:

I got it pretty cheap ($500) and mainly bought it to have as a backup.

I could definitely work with it combined with a few of my pedals if it was the house supplied backline for a show.

I made a quick clip of mine, boosted with a Maxon OD-9. This one is a 2100 mkiii, not sure how different they are to the 4100's?

The difference is you've got one of the good ones.....lol..

The Mklll is the diode one done right. The 4100's are the one usually referred to as the shite ones. The SLX, is flavored like the mklll but with an extra tube in the pre.
 
Back when they came out I bought a 2100...and my buddy bought a 4100

Sounds pretty good. Are you using V30s for most of your clips ?

I think there is supposed to be quite a bit of difference in your 2100 as opposed to the 4100. The 2100 version being the first one's out of Marshall when they introduced the line, was supposed to be Jim Marshall's answer to amp modification. At least this is what I read in his biography. As for the combo's I had to play, they were generally muddy to me on stage. Fortunately, the FOH was good and didn't need a whole lot of stage volume. The EQ in front of the amp made it usable. I was twisting away with knobs and it didn't seem to have much EQ control. That said, there's no telling how these amps have been mistreated over the years.
 
Yea I had the 2501 combo . . Nothing wrong with that amp at all . . I have about 10-11 different Marshalls now modded and unmodded, just because I'm addicted to amps, but I gigged regularly with my 2501 and people loved it ,as did I . Nothing at all wrong with it

they get alot of flak, but one of the best recordings i ever heard on record was a 5150 dual tracked with a JCM900.

i think i have played a 4100, on their own it does not have enough gain to pull off solos comfortably for me, but under a mic there are definitely worst amplifiers out there - my modeler vyper for example.

might have to find an SLX somewhere someday just for shits and giggles.
 
haha, that sounded pretty good man! I've never been interested in one after hearing so many negative opinions, but that sounds like it's a steal at $500!

You have a bunch of Marshalls now right? That voodoo clip was probably my favorite. What's your favorite at this point for the 80's hairmetal?
 
Actually i recently got my hands on a JCM 900 from someone who just had one sitting around for years and didnt want it or really know what it was (wasnt a guitar player). Problem with it is that it looks like none of the fuses or the little black twist caps they fit them in with, are in the back of the amp. They are missing. Where can one find the needed stuff to get them back in the amp to see if it even works. *note-- Obviously i dont have much experience with doing anything with the amps other than turning them on and playing them
 
the differance is that the 2100/2500 were like a hotrodded single channel 800, I really like the dual footswitchable master volumes that came stock on them. I had a 2500 and other then lacking the volume of my older marshalls it was a decent head and I got some nice tones. The 4100 I disliked and hated. They have one at my rehearsal studio and I drag my own gear just because they suck that much.

IMO the 2100/2500 is right up there with the reissue 2203's (this opinion is based on playing a 2500 while owning a 2203x) soundwise. And as joepete77 said the dual footswitchable mastervolumes is a great feature.

And as usual with your clips I now GAS for a JC900 as well :P.
