Delays for the most part sound crappy out front. I've always thought i didn't want to "butcher" my 2204 combo but fact of the matter is that i don't have an interest in running wet/dry. I wanna grab this combo and go with a few pedals on the floor. A cheapo delay/verb in the loop would be fantastic. So is the metro amps loop the way to go? Mojotone looks sold out right now. Who else makes one that is easy to install and doesn't need tweaking once in?

I put a metro in my 2204 and I have no regrets. It's very transparent. Cost like 140 installed too! You'll have many say that you are devaluing the amp but in reality, there are a ton of these things out there, so it's not like they are collectors items anyway. Made my amp worth a lot more to me because it works for what I do. I say do it. I don't regret putting one in mine at all.

So metro is still very active and selling those then? I thought George was taking down the store for a while so i questioned whether goods would ship on time. I think SDM from the metro forum had a hand in designing that loop and i know he knows his stuff. Helped me years ago on a build. Standup guy.

I've put many Metro loops in and think it's the best loop out there.

If metro is sold out, you might want to try Granger amps, they have a new "ultimate effects loop" that is the same high voltage design as the metro with the ability to manipulate send and return levels

Sweet thanks guys... I really like the look of that granger. I like the idea of being able to adjust levels. Great price too. Think I might take a shot with it as working between rack or pedals, nice to have the versatility to adjust.

I have been thinking of having this mod done to my Marshall 50 watter. Thanks for the info.

You know, I remember Rockstah replying to a thread on mods where people were saying not to butcher classic amps and he had a very valid point. He said he saw no point in keeping a classic amp around that you didn't play. If modding it made you play it, isn't that the point? I'd think gigging with a combo amp and a pedal board would be the easiest.

Understand how you feel. Depends on how you like to hear your delays. There are good delays that sound good either in front or in the loop of an amp. They are out there.

I like the delay to sit almost underneath the tone, as if it is part of it and is not overbearing. I think that probably means I am more of a loop guy.

I dont see any problem with putting a loop in practically anything( serious vintage plexis and superleads might require a bit of thought though)

I think that a parallel loop would serve you best but if your using some grind out of your 800, a regular old series loop would work great and just dial in the delay to your tastes...

Yep, grind comes mostly from the OD's i put in front of the amp. That's what makes the 2204 so great for going from AC DC up to hair nation.

Yeah, everyone seems to be on to Metro. I was going to say to check out the Metro forums. 'Plenty of Marshall modders over there. Check out Larry amps. That dude makes art.

Guys, just to update this thread.. I installed a Granger zero loss effects loop (similar to metro) and it is working like a champ. Hardest part was in fact drilling the holes. Luckily i had good bits but starting the damn thing was not that easy. Sounds really good to my ear and if i set my input/output settings properly on my GmajorII I can't say i hear any effect to the tone. Sounds really good.

Sweet!!! Glad you are enjoying that... I had a question for anyone who cares to ask though, and sorry OP... but, can I have one of these effects loops installed in a peavey 5150 (I know not an ideal amp for effects loop) or in a mesa 2 channel triple rectifier?

I dont like either of their effects loops and might upgrade the clean channels on those amps, then I would need a better effects loop.

doesn't sound like a good idea, pfapin
they have a dedicated loop for that
if you don't like an amps loop, logical thing is modding the loop to sound better, not installing another invasive one

I had an fx loop installed by Tim Caswell on a 2203. Works really well and is foot switchable!

Regarding the 5150, I swear by that amp and I feel your pain, the loop can be hard to work with. After many inquiries, it seems that the faults of the loop are tied into the overall design, and I get the impression that it's not a simple matter of bypassing or even modding the loop as it will affect the tone of the amp in the way the preamp is being fed into the power. Running one pedal in it, like an eq or delay, shouldn't be a problem though.
