Hudson was using a Fender Twin and JCM 2203 iirc. One of the very few bands I love that never released a bad album. I even loved the last one they did, Sol Invictus; it’s got one of my favorite FNM songs on it of all time, ”Matador”.
Was supposed to see them at Knotfest last year but Patton bailed on it. At least we got thrash metal Bungle out of the deal, but damnit I really want to fucking see FNM! I’ve never had the chance to see Patton live in any of his 2,000 bands.
I think Hudson got swept under the rug for a few different reasons; he always just looked like a regular dude as where Martin is pretty instantly recognizable, or he was back then anyway, and the band never really seemed excited about having him as a replacement, it was just “Yeah, we got a dude to play guitar for us”. I know Patton wasn’t eager to have Spruance in the band and said something along the lines of “He’ll eventually fuck it or us up and we’ll have to fire him”, which seems to have worked out exactly that way, maybe by the time Hudson got in they were running on fumes within the band.
Definitely an odd one in that regard; none of the members seem particularly fond of being in FNM, they’ve openly talked about how they’re friendly with each other without really being friends. And even when they’ve been at the burnout point, they’re still able to release great fucking music.
I know Jim used a bunch of Marshall and Mesa stuff, I want to say Hudson has always been a Marshall dude but never saw much about his rigs. It’s almost as if no one gave a shit about the dude. That’s a bummer, he’s a consistent player and I love the shit he does with an e-bow on “Stripsearch”, great tones on those albums and live, never heard the dude fuck up. I guess he was just so middle of the road he didn’t raise any eyebrows.
Last I heard he was living in Northern CA messing around with the world of competitive pumpkin growing. It was 2203 when I saw them but yeah definitely one of those guys nobody talks about. I was actually surprised to see them mentioned in this thread. Not sure what happened with Jim but he basically fucked off and was growing pumpkins for awhile
