I wanted to make a clip of my modded '78 Marshall 1959 with the volume cranked a little.
I had it up about half way.
I like the way the EL34's break-up at this volume. :D
I'm hoping I captured this sound in the recording
It hard to get a good recording at this volume.
I had to back the mic off big time.
Check it out & let me know what you guys think.

I forgot to mention I kicked in my MXR phase 90 in the lead parts. :D

Cheer's Cody

Checked out a few of your VH clips.
You definatly got the tone.

Everyone has there own opinion(add reverb, phase, more gain, blaw blaw blaw)
but I hear what I hear & I think your right on the money.

Thanks for the kind words.

Yeah I find my '78 JMP 2204 with a few mods does the brown sound very well.

This clip turned out pretty good. :D

That's so clear and articulate, while sounding so raw!

Thanks for the feedback

I really like the way the amp plays & feels.

Great playing and tone

Thank You Guys.

I appreciate the kind words.

What I love about the Super Lead is it's got that 70's sound, no matter what I do to it. :D

I should mention, in these clips it's just straight amp head with a few modifications.
No PPIMV
No attenuator
No boost pedal.
The only pedal I use is a modded MXR phase 90 (block logo) that I kick in & out on most of the leads in the clips.

I'm always interested in how people get this tone. How extensive were your mods? Anything you'd share? All I have changed on my JCM800 were a few caps in the preamp to bring out a tad more gain. Sounds like you may have played with the filtering as well?

What I did to the 2204:
1. Replaced the V1A cathode resistor (10k stock) with a 4.7k and bypassed it with a .1uF FILM RADIAL cap.
2. Replaced the V1B cathode resistor (2.7k stock) with a 820r and changed the stock .68uF to a .47uF bypass cap.
3. Bypassed the V2A cathode resistor(820r) with a .68uF cap.
4. Tone stack lift ( removed the ground wire from the 25K L middle pot.)
5. Replaced the 33k tone stack slope resistor with a 47k.
6. Replaced the 100k NFB resistor with a 47k.
7. Replaced the stock .1uF on the presence to a .68uF.
8. Lowered the stock filtering (50uf+50uf) to 32uf+32uf preamp (16uf+16uf screen/PI) I left the mains at 50uf+50uf.
9. Removed the bright cap.

The tone stack lift gives the amp more gain, the middle bass ect. controls will lose some FX but very easy to dial in this way.

The .68uF (SoZo) on the presence affects the mids & highs.
The .1uF (stock) only affects the highs.

The 47k NFB resistor makes the amp sound '67-'68 plexi.

Hopefully this helps. ;)

Damn that thing sounds good! 1rst clip I heard that makes me want to mod mine a little. Most modded marshalls don't sound like a marshall to me anymore, that ones awesome. Slick playing too man

Yep more than helps! I wish I had left V1A @ 4.7 but I put it back to stock and I burned the traces on the board because I was lazy that day and thought I could easily mod it without removing the board. :( I like what you did though, def gone further than I did. I might have to try and source another PCB for mine and try some moddage on the old one. Anybody know where I can find a new old stock PCB's for Marshalls? My guess would be NOWHERE.

I found this, an old clip i did with my DIY plexi tonestack lifted: http://www.pleximods.com/tonestacklift.html bottom of the page here. Def. reminds me how much the gain gets bumped. Kinda flubby at my end though..
