Joe Satriani is sterile.

EDIT: For what it's worth, this is not my opinion. I think he's a great player and can actually play with restraint, something that a lot of shredders could learn I guess.

His playing is stiff, IMO. At least when compared to Yngwie, Steve Vai, GG etc.

Being compared to those three doesn't make his playing sterile in and of itself.

He is a huge reason guitar rock is still around today with his G3 stuff and of course SWTA, can't pick Satch apart.

Sterile or not IMHO is debatable...... fact is he kicked open the door for rock guitar instrumental albums so alot of people must not have found him sterile.

That said.... I havent liked much he's done since "Crystal Panet"

Don't dig his tone, but hes a great player with some really catchy tunes

I guess his later albums can't match up to his previous ones..

Also I thought Super Collosal was a pretty solid album, but the last one

I think his playing was very organic up to cp, but his tone was killer till he stopped using the 6100's. after that....phtttttttp

Listen to The Extremist CD. Still to this day thats my favorite of all of Satch's work and it shows how much soul and passion the guy plays with.

I dont listen to him all that much anymore and if i do, its usually stuff from the 80s or early 90s. But you cant deny, he's an incredible musician.

How do you define stiff? I think is tone is a little too compressed and takes away from his playing, like on Cryin' i love the track but not the tone

I guess because he doesn't have a tone wide vibrato he's not soulful

The thing is, I like smooth guitarplaying. Yngwie, Vai etc are very smooth players and it's these kind of players to whom I compare other "greats" or people's playing smoothness.

I guess I can hear a little of the "stifness" it's probably a combination of his playing style and his crappy tone   I've noticed he controls his notes alot to not ring out

I think a lot of it has to do with his ultra compressed shitty tone, don't hear any sag in his playing which I guess would probably "smooth" things out, ie Vai with Bogners and Yngwie with Plexis

if you give a listen to the various G3 cd's, you can pick joe out from the all star jams just about every time. That kind of distinctive styling is anything but sterile imo. his playing on red house or my guitar wants to kill your mama on the first one is killer.
the Professor Satch cd is anything but sterile.
more funky than satch surf imo, but he is having fun with it. Kind of like issaac hays meets satch on the title track and a few others.
like dan said, not like the extremist, but that was his break away from stu hamm and campatelli and his hook up with the bissonette brothers. took a nice left turn and got back to some killer straight ahead rock playing.

he did bring bissonette back to play bass on the last one, but I dont hear the influence as heavy. I think he really needs his brother playing with him to sound his best.

Exactly. The rest of them just seem to blaze from first to last. Malmsteen is even blazing OVER the song in their jams. Satch seems to always try to initially play what's best for the song, or in the style of the song, until he pops up with his legato runs later on as the wankery level increases.

You can pick all the G3 players from the jams; Vai, Yngwie, Satch, Gilbert, Petrucci etc...

He's the only one of those guys I'll listen to intentionally. I like his melodic sense.
