Back in the day, I was a Vai fanatic and didnt think much of Satch. All these years later, I dont really care for Vai so much and really enjoy and prefer Satch... Go figure

LOL, my thoughts exactly when thinking about music. :D I prefer Vai's smooth playing over Satriani's stiff-ish playing though.

To me, Satch isnt stiff, has well thought out melodies and tunes where as Vai is kind of a convoluted mess to me. maybe not a mess but just too much going on...

I wish I could be as stiff and sterile as Satch and be in such a writing rut!

So first he was sterile, then stiff, now he's stiff-ish?

Maybe rut was too strong a word. I love Satch's music. I just felt the new album (Satchifunkalis) was a bit uninspired compared to other releases. Funny enough, I still like several tunes on it. For me, the replay value on it isn't as strong. I will always support Satch with my hard earned dollar because I like what he stands for and I appreciate his playing. His releases are no brainer purchases for me.

I don't care too much for Satch's music. It's not that I don't think he's a good player, or whatever, he just doesn't tickle me.

I am fascinated by his tone though. I wish I could get that super-saturated single-note thing like he does. I wouldn't use it all the time, but It would be nice to have.

It may just be the DS-1 into clean amp vibe...I dunno, never tried that.

I'm with you on his tone. It is weird to me. It sounds saturated and modern but maintains a vintage quality (especially in his live lead playing). I'm a fanoboy and not ashamed to admit it.

Speaking of which, I posted a while ago asking if anyone has played his new Vox "Satchurator" pedal, but got no responses...has anyone had a chance to play one of these yet? I'm assuming it has a modded DS-1 vibe, but I don't know, there aren't any around here for me to test...

Does he pretty much run his JSX clean and a modded DS-1 in front? Personally I'm not a big fan of his tone

I really enjoy Joe. "The Crush of Love" that came as a "sound-page" tear-off in a guitar magazine years ago really inspired me to pick up the guitar.

Some of his recorded tones IMO are amazing. In some of his more recent work , in one song he might have 4 or more different guitar sounds going on and one of them will be absolutely killer: the defention of Soldano or Cornford etc YOU CAN HEAR IT!!! Ive really noticed this more and more.

People that say they hate his tone I don't get  Maybe they just listened to 1 or 2 of his songs and base their "tone" comments on that.

His playing is stiff, IMO, when compared to Yngwie, Vai, Guthrie etc. Adam, don't get so butt-hurt if I don't like Satriani's playing a lot. :hys: I like his compositioins though.

It's funny. You can tell from my post I like it but I don't. I can't put my finger on it.

I'm not butthurt in the slightest, merely calling you out on your retarded opinion. As I say, I think Satriani is a great player, but I'm not what I would consider a big fan. How is that butthurt?

For starting this thread. :hys: :hys: :hys:

i actually feel vai and petrucci are more "sterile" to my ears, satch plays with more soul and feel imo.

but i still like vai and petrucci!

I went through a phase where I likes Satch a LOT. While I continue to listen to his stuff, my favorite is Crystal Planet and Extremist. I've always liked his playing as well as Petrucci and Vai.

Tell me an example of where Satch playing is sterile or stiff compare to another that is not.
Also, perhaps, the so called stiffness may be done on purpose because it fits the song.

I don't know...

From what I hear his JSX isn't stock. He might be using a Marshall Major soon. He called my friend Dawk and talked to him about having Dawk mod his Major like he did for Ritchie Blackmore.
