Joe Satriani is sterile.

He's the only one of those guys I'll listen to intentionally. I like his melodic sense.

JS writes catchy songs.

More than anything I feel his writing is in a rut. His latest release was very sub par. I actually really like Super Colossal and Is There Love In Space. Some of the early stuff sounds dated but I still like it a lot.

That being said, as a rock guitarist he has had the strongest influence on my playing than any other single guitarist.

I also liked Super Colossal because there were a lot of catchy tunes on that CD. It's funny when you hear the song crowd chant played in stadiums, on ESPN, Sportscenter, on sports talk radio shows.

Before that i like Crystal Planet a lot and of course Flying and Surfing. A lot of his other stuff kinda meshes together. Maybe he should give instrumentals a break for a while and get a singer we all know and write some rock songs, or join up with a band we all know.

I actually dont really care for Crystal planet or the more over the top satch..

I really dig the new one, the self titled, and the extremist the best.. he seems to really be more into creating a vibe than a sheer amount of notes and crazy tricks..I like the sounds and tunes as well

I would rather listen to Satch over anything Malmsteen or Vai have put out in the last 10 years...

I dig a lot of what Satch does. I think there's at least two or more gems on each of his works. With so much crap out there, I'll take two or more gems.

I used to love Vai and think satch was a little "boring"
Now I really like Satch, and think Vai is a little "out there"

I guess I got old and boring :D

Exactly, Knut! I prefer Satriani's compositions but prefer Vai's playing, especially smoothness. :D

G3 Denver one can argue is the best pure guitar dvd out there and the jams on that disk are the most electrified G3 jams around due to Yngwie.

Yeah, if I could have the chops of one of them... :D It would be Vai. He can do anything it seems.

He`s anything but discreet, that`s for sure!

I don't see how anyone could say that Satch is sterile...he's covered so many bases over his career, more so than a lot of other guitarists. Engines of Creation was a techno-ish style album, Surfing was a surf-shred album, the Extremist was a great rock record, the self titled album was pretty blues based, he did some heavy 7 string stuff over SBM and Love in Space, and his last record was pretty funky in a lot of spots. How is this sterile in any way? It's not like he's Yngwie or AC/DC or Slayer, where you know what a record is going to sound like before it comes out, and you either love their style or you don't. I love all three as well, but it's not like they ever surprise me, while Satch does.

I saw the G3 tour he did with Vai and Yngwie when they came to Montreal, and his playing connected with me the most. I think it's because he comes from a blues background and knows when to go all out and when to hold back. Yngwie was by far the fastest, but after a while it was like "OK Yngwie, I know you can play fast, but I've heard these scales before, play something that I can relate to." Vai was totally hit or miss, some of his stuff like "For the Love of God" is truly inspiring, while other stuff seems like total wanking (especially with some of those facial expressions he has...oye!).

Just my two cents.

of all the monster technique guitar gods that have been mentioned in the thread (basically the G3 type guys), I'd have to choose Vai as my favorite. He's a really interesting musician to me.

Never listened to enough Satch stuff.

love Yngwie's instrumental stuff

Agree with every syllable.

I'd like to see Joe take more time in between releases. He seems to be on a fixed schedule that smacks of descending into homogeny.

Saw G3 with Malmsteen, at the begining of the night, I thought wow, he's still got it, but by the end of the night I kinda felt like he was trying to fit too many 64th note licks into every last nook and cranny of every song they did. Joe and steve were trying to do what worked in the song, Malmsteem was " I dont care if your singing, I must play more notes!! " Although Joe can't sing, I thought Malmsteen should have been a little more respectful of his space in the song. He did this the whole night. It HAD to be getting on Joe's nerves. By the time the DVD was recorded, he had stopped doing it so much, and it was awesome! - Just my 2 cents - Jim

Yeah, that is one thing I forgot to mention, as amazing a guitarist Satch is, he can't sing worth beans   Every single song he's ever put vocals on are the tracks I skip on an album (Blue Dream is the worst for this).

Back in the day, I was a Vai fanatic and didnt think much of Satch. All these years later, I dont really care for Vai so much and really enjoy and prefer Satch... Go figure
