I gotta say that after being a huge fan of Tipton and Downing, then melting to the power of Dimebag on VDOP, and then digging on Tommy Victor's (Prong) writing and live performances, there hasn't been much that catches my attention guitar-wise........... <<<<<longest run on sentence ever!!!!

HOWEVER, I saw John 5 play with RZ when they opened for Ozzy several years ago, and was impressed. I actually thought he did the Star Spangled Banner better than Zakk on that particular night. At any rate, I started YT'ing him recently cuz my bro in law met him and sent me some pic's of them together. Man I gotta say that even though I'm not into about 1/2 of the music he's done, he is still a friggin' sic player! I honestly can't think of any other "famous" player in the past 10-15 years that I've spent this much time watching, even though I don't like a good deal of the actual songs themselves.

I even like that he has the whole "Hollywood" alter ego thing going on, and comes across as really eccentric. He is a killer player, has a cool image, entertains like a broadway actor, and comes across as super freaky on stage. Yet he still sounds like a middle school kid who just found his weiner when talking about guitar and getting to play with some of his idols.

When I saw him stick his face in the bass players butt when playing live with Two (Halford singing), I almost fell out of my chair. He was playing like a monster even though the riff was basic, was dressed like a cheap tranny hooker, jumping around like a 12 year old on Ritalin, crossed with Billy Idol on guitar after whiffing up a pound of coke!!!!!!!!!!

WELL DONE SIR!!!!!!!

John 5 is a monster player!!!!   I also seen him with RZ but back at the 2005 Ozzfest!!!

And entertaining as heck to boot! It's like Steve Stevens ran into a bi-polar Broadway musical actor on METH! When Zombie did their first song, all the players on stage were dressed like Nazi SS troops while the "Zombie Nazi Strippers From Hell," (or whatever it was called) short movie was playing in the background, with tons of hot, naked girls that looked dead. And all the while they were doing this syncopated, robotish, move and pose thingy the whole time without missing a single note. It was one of the best "rock" shows I've ever seen, if for no other reason than all the costume changes and theatrics.

The whole show was full of loud guitar, creepy vocals, naked girls/porn, and devils. What else could you ask for from a rock show?

Yeah, Rob Zombie puts on a great show. Not a huge fan of his music and I wish John 5 was allowed to let loose a bit on his studio stuff!!!

John 5 is awesome. Has a massive catalogue of killer music at his finger tips, gives nods to country and finger pickin' styles, talks blues, knows his jazz chords, and overall, just loves playing guitar. Ya, he's a freakshow with his get-up and all, but that's to be expected when you're playing for Manson and Zombie - it's part of the schtick. But for actual talent? He's most certianly up there, and in that case, pretty underrated in my humble opinion as I think a lot of peeps dismiss him as a schlock-cock-shock rocker only. But he's got mega skill and chops.

Cool thread

Yeah RZ is a tad bland, but most of the tunes are catchy at least, and the show is the kill!

Yeah man, I know a few real pro players, and even they respect the stink out of J5. He's the real deal no matter what peeps think about the bands he's played with.

John 5 is one of the top 20 players in mainstream now in my book.

Crazy variety of chops and great funk metal swing player.

Monster player been a fan of his for a long time. What he does in RZ and even what he did in MM is probably just fun for him, His solo stuff is on another level though.

Badass guitar player.... and he's one of the only guys I've ever heard get killer tone from a JCM 900 Dual Reverb.

He was in the minority of the guest guiatrist that sounded great on That Metal Show. Definitely a monster player.

Heck as a total package, (ability, creativity, showmanship, love for the guitar, etc.) I'd put him in the top 5 easily if not THE top as far as current/relavent players go. I personally think that skill is only about 1/4 of the equation, and you MUST have the other 3/4's to be "great" instead of "good." JMO of course.

Heh for me prolly THE ONLY one lol!

He rips. I thought he was wasting his talent when he played with Marilyn Manson,

The dude's a certified badass. I actually really like the acoustic stuff on "God Told Me To".

I'm sure the $$$$$$$$$$ made it seem not quite so wasteful.

I met him once and he seemed like a pretty appreciative guy. He has monster chops and I'd like to see him play with another artist who could use his skill more than Zombie uses it.

....I'm still waiting on him to break into the country scene...

Very cool! I saw PM5K last year, and it was a very cool show. I still have a demo cassette tape from the 90's that someone handed me in a parking lot in Portland, OR at the Zombie/Pantera show at the Collesium!
