John Petrucci discusses how his Mark V won out over his IIC+

First off, I own a Mark V and think it's a great amp....although with it's faults here and there when compared to other Mark series amps, which is something that has been voiced by many MKV users in the public arena since it's release. Well, this video below shows JP explaining how he ultimately ended up only using his MKV in the studio to make DT's last record....even though he brought other amps, such as his IIC+'s. He says the MKV in IIC+ mode sounded a lot better than his actual IIC+'s for leads, so he didn't use them. And, maybe he really did prefer the V.......

But, this really sounds like a lot of BS to me. It seems as if Mesa put JP up to making this video with the intended goal of trying to change public opinion about the MKV. Like, "No, really!...The MKV is every bit and more better than a IIC+!" Thoughts?

at least he mentioned which modes and channels he uses. I think Mesa asked him to do this vid in hopes of gaining more interest in the MKV. but I don't feel anything he said is false. in fact, it matches up perfectly with the recent Premier Guitar rig rundown video of his live rig with his tech:

Pure Marketing there, trying to sell mark V's and put to rest the requests for a IIC+ reissue.

Still expecting to see a mark V revision sometime in the future from Mesa if the pattern holds true.

All it takes is a well placed statement from the right person to get fans of said amp to say "I told you so".

Forums are the perfect fodder for stuff like this imo.

Whether Mesa put him up to it or not who knows wouldn't suprise me. Maybe John has been following all the forums and seeing people bash the V so he makes the video to get back at them.

For some reason I tend to trust Petrucci, he's always been a straight shooter with a solid ear for tone. Even though Mesa fans are hating on the MKV, I don't think he would go on record saying anything which he knew was outright false. Though his poker face does make it difficult to read him, but for whatever reason after watching the video, I think he is not lying...?

I have seen some of the bashing of the mark V, but also plenty of threads with heavy praise. Just seems to go in waves.

I saw that video a couple weeks ago and thought the same thing. Seemed like an overt effort to sway public opinion of the MKV.

I don't own the amp nor have I played one, but am a Petrucci fan and came to the same conclusion as the op.

They just need to come out with the Mark 6 and then everyone will love the 5.

Have to say I'm quite intrigued about this amp's sound and possibilities. Is it complicated to use and to get dialed in?

Or get Lynch to endorse it.

The Mark V that I played did not sound like my IIC+. I'm not saying that it was a bad amp, but it just didn't sound like my IIC+. If John likes the V better, good for him.

I've never played a IIC+ or V so I can't judge how they would sound better or at least differently, but if people want a IIC+, why doesn't Mesa give them an amp that really sounds like a IIC+, or a better IIC+ mode? What is the point of releasing version 5, 6, 100 of something if it takes you further from where your customers actually want to be?

What I find funny is that his tone 6 Degrees Of Inner Turbulence owns his tone now, of course IMHO. Guess what he used on that album?

And yes, Mesa is currently make the Mark V, they want you to buy that amp. Going out and buying a used IIC+ doesn't put any money in Mesa's pockets.

Oh, I see comments need to be approved first. Lame.

+1

I wanted to like the Mark V but didn't agree with it. I owned a IIC+ and a IV and loved both amps. Mesa Boogies are master marketers.

I have been playing with one of these in my local GC. I have tried it through 4 different cabs, and for whats its worth I am impressed. I sold my IIc+ ages ago and remember it fondly, but when I started playing around with the Mark V it totally shocked me. Mesa spent the time developing this amp and I think they did a fantastic job. I would be spending money on this amp right now if it were not that I had a different goal in mind.

I am a fan of Dream Theater and Petrucci also, and have been to several of the meet and greets. Of those conversations with Petrucci he has never struck me as a dishonest or the type to just to hawk gear guy. He is pretty straight forward when asking him stuff about gear, sound and tone. The last meet and greet he still had his IIc's in his rig and spent time talking about his process in dialing what he needs to hear on his amps. When I saw them in Mesa as their last show of the year I was at the stage during breakdown and saw the rig. Not a IIc to be found just as he has been saying. Time will tell as I am pretty sure if he hears something he does not like, he wont waste time changing it.
