my how times have changed!

VHT used to be the go to answer!

I didn't think my old Ultralead's channel 3 was that tight actually, certainly didn't match the internet forum "facts" about it. Channel 2 however, was extremely tight and great for fast rhythm playing.

On a sidenote:

I think tightness is overrated and the somewhat linear "tighter is better" mantra you see on metal oriented forums doesn't always apply. I've owned/played some amps that had a reputation for tightness that just sounded plain bad or uninspiring to me. Maybe that's where the "sterile" comments up above come from perhaps.

My framus cobra and vht ul was both tight, alot tighter than my bogners, rectos, 6505, herbert and einstein, and alot of other amps.

In my experience Engl's are lot more of what I'd consider tight metal sounding than Diezel's or Bogners. But to me they can easily sound harsh and resemble a Boss Metal zone pedal.

VHT's are much tighter than Diezel's as well but they don't sound great to me at low volumes and might not be as fun to play, and everyone loves to throw the dry word around just like Diezel gets the sterile word thrown around. But i can totally where people are coming from when they throw those terms around to describe these amps.

You're 100% correct. Everyone thinks tighter is better and that not always how i feel. Lot's of guys prefer Bogners for their chewy nature which is anything but tight but that's why they like them. Often times whatever most people think is better about an amp they'll just list whatever amp they own. Look at the Recto, they're looser than Sponge Bob Square Pants and yet they're mentioned in this thread.

I am not a Diezel fan (blasphemy I know around here). For me they are sterile, not tight. I prefer the VHT Pitbull UL for tight metal thythm. For me the king is the Ampeg VH140C for metal Rhythm.

Is it because you have one in the classifieds?

I have 3 of them. So, no.

VHT ULtra Lead has been the tightest I have played/owned. Almost too tight. Almost bland at times too. I kinda miss that amp and it sounded it's best right after I put new tubes in it to ship it off.  Kept thinking "WTF am I doing selling this?".

Oh, and it cut through a mix without breaking a sweat.

I can't believe someone actually said Recto.  For my Recto to become tight, as in VH4, Pitbull or Engl Blackmore tight) I had to change to KT77s or EL34s, GZ34 rectifier tubes or use Diodes, mod the actual circuit for a faster response, and use a boost.
then yes it can compete with others. :D

Stock, they won't come close to the above amps. A boost alone will only get you part of the way there.

Fortin's Hulk Mod or NATAS gets first place IMO.

I find my the Triple recto to be really tight, and then with a boost it is even tighter. I can't believe some people are saying recto's aren't tight

I don't like a Really Tight amp, I like an amp that is tight and pretty chewy.

The Framus dragon is also pretty damn tight.

Probably because they're not.

OK guys, so what's a loose amp? Xtc? I'm sure an XTC guys chime in 2 seconds later and tell me how tight his amp is.

The Framus Cobra and the Engl Fireball 100...
those amps are SUPER TIGHT!!
