Something solid state.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'm amazed this thread got through so many posts before someone said that.

I know the AXE FX was mentioned, I'd probably go with that.

The chicks are loose, but the (solid state) amps used on the stage are tight... haha.

My Mesa/Boogie MarkIV has a very tight sound. To me tightness is how the bottom end frequencies "hold together", they don't rumble or splurge, the sound is firm and percussive, thick & chunky but SOLID and firm. Firm and tight like a clenched fist. You can feel how they hold together tightly. The note can ring out after being played, but it doesn't flop about like a loose amp does.

If you don't want a tight amp sounding stiff and dry, then wet it a bit with a little reverb. It gives the effect of the notes ringing out slightly (or ringing out more, depends how high you turn up the reverb level), just enough to broaden them. It's good because it makes the whole tone sound thicker, as long as only a little is used.

I will take the Pepsi Challenge against anything for Tightness and downright brutality for Metal Rhythm with an Ampeg VH140C. There are other amps I like better for lead, but it made me not miss selling my VHT Pitbull UL one bit. Dying Fetus, Suffocation tones. They still use them today. For DM tones by far my favorite.

Of the amps I've owned the list shakes out like this:
Tightest, meanest and most articulate was the VHT Deliverance D-120, followed by:
Baron M-60 II
Krank Rev One
Randal V-Max/Randall Cyclone
FJA modded Ampeg VL-501
Engl Blackmore
Engl Fireball 60
Peavey Ultra
Mesa Dual Rec
