It's a great record too!
Makes me wish Dream Theatre gave up the old heavy crap.

This seems rather tame for Guthrie. Usually I hear a lot more of a unique voice from him.

That's why I like it, he's actually playing a song as opposed to widdly widdly stuff. Great melodic solo in my opinion, fitted the bill :)

OK I can see that angle. Though the thing that is most appealing to me about Guthrie is his unique voice. This could be anybody.

Not with that vibrato

It's just nice to see him play a real guitar! ;)

I love the end when he exhales. I know the feeling.

hmm. I thought his vibrato was the weakest part of the playing. He had an opportunity for nice big vibrato and he went with a tight wiggle, every time...
Maybe he was sort of flying by the seat of his pants-improving through the parts. :dunno:

I agree. I noticed it too because it's one of my worst habits. Working on breaking that though.

I don't normally like his playing

after watching this

I still don't

It's rare that I read anyone critiquing the playing of arguably the most accomplished virtuoso electric guitar player of all time.

Wait what band is this?! Steven Wilson, Marco, and Guthrie???? I've been out of the widdly, widdly, music for too long lol.

i read in a mag that wilson forced guthrie to dial it back

I suspect there is some ego clash. Its supposed to be like a stripped down Dream Theater thing but most people probably see it as The Guthrie Show plus extras.

I'd argue that one of Govan's most endearing qualities is his humility. I can't imagine him ever in a position where his ego would compromise the music he was sessioning to.
Everything he does is either earnest and tasteful, or intentionally ott for comedy value.

I thought it was awesome. Reza I liked the fast vibrato as in a different vibe! I have the record, Wilson is genius in my book. Love the Heavy riff but sometimes the moody is good! Yea I read where Wilson did want him to hold him back a bit. Tasty in my humble opinion.....

That is just simply awesome, with great playing and vibrato period!

What he plays here fits, which is more important than anything frankly. Going to see this tour tomorrow night, though sadly Guthrie and Marco aren't on the bill.

I still say that his solo in 'Drive Home' is one of the best things ever recorded in the history of ever. Starts at 5:05 for the impatient :) :
